Askîy Âcimona Summer Program Director Nova Courchene and teacher Dezarae Meade are excited to share some big news connected to the work we’re bringing into the community.
The theatre games, storytelling exercises, and creative tools we use in our programming come from the same youth theatre work that has been growing over the past decade with the Independent Youth Indigenous Theatre Organziation, Oshkagoojin Indigenous Theatre for Youth: oshkagoojin.onstage
We’re proud to share that this work is now reaching the mainstage.
In May 2027, Nanabush and the Spirit of Thunder will be presented on the mainstage at Prairie Theatre Exchange.
The play is based on the work of Daphne Odjig adapted by Dezarae Meade, and will be directed by Philip Geller.
Programs like the one happening through Askîy Âcimona are part of that bigger vision: community-driven storytelling where young people build confidence, creativity, and the skills to share their own stories.
Community-driven programs like this help create the foundation where young people can imagine their stories growing into opportunities on much larger stages.
We’re proud to bring these tools into the community and excited for youth here to explore their own storytelling and creative voices.
This play will be professionally produced with trained adult actors who deliver the story on stage in 2027 at PTE.
