A way I minimized negative distraction as a neurodiverse fitness student…
One of my amazing coaches Oxygen Yoga North Van], Lisa .fitness.lifestyle, asked me to post about this so here it goes:
I started out at the studio 20lbs heavier than I am today and with far less muscle mass and tone. I wore leggings and sleeveless t-shirts. As I’ve progressed and become more confident in my body, I’ve started to wear proper fitness gear, including cropped tanks and sports bras. It allows me to see my muscles activate and increases my ROM without unnecessary textiles creating unwanted resistance.
But today, I wasn’t feeling it.
I felt weird and self-conscious at what I saw in the mirror, and it sent me into a spiral of negative self-talk.
Fitness and yoga have taught me to live in the moment and bring it all back to my breath, yet, I still dissociate frequently. Encouragingly, I’ve become far more self-aware as a result of this practice. And that’s why it’s called practice - because it’s never going to be perfect all the time, but we still show up for ourselves, and do the very best we can with the resources available to us for that day.
When I realized I was focusing on the wrong thing in class, I chose to put my tank top back on top of my sports bra to minimize the distraction from my workout. It really helped me refocus, and man did I need it, because Lisa ran an 11/10 class today and it was super hard. This has happened previously many times, but I used to get stuck in my head about it, allowing it to impact the rest of my self-care time. Today, I took decisive action.
I’m really proud of myself and grateful I can feel empowered to make choices that meet my needs.
