A discovery of kelp growing in the waters around Neptune’s terminal in 2023 helped spark a research partnership with the University of British Columbia.

Since then, Neptune has funded UBC’s Bull Kelp Restoration Program, supporting research into protecting and enhancing bull kelp in Burrard Inlet.

That research is also part of the Lynn Creek Estuary project. In this video, we step inside the lab to see how researchers grow kelp and prepare seeded tiles for experimental planting on the reef.

The work connects carefully controlled lab conditions with the waters of the estuary, where researchers can study how the kelp responds over time.

📍 Take a look at Lynn Creek Estuary from above.

At the mouth of the creek, the underwater rock reef sits where freshwater meets Burrard Inlet, a short distance from our North Vancouver terminal.

This is the waterfront we work on, and caring for its marine habitat is part of our responsibility. The reef is one way we are putting that commitment into practice, creating new habitat for salmon, crabs, groundfish, kelp, and other marine life.

Meet Dave Foy, Neptune's Vice President, Operations.

Dave has worked at Neptune for 22 years and oversees the safe and efficient movement of bulk cargo through our terminal while maintaining Neptune's high environmental standards. His commitment to safety goes back to his mining career, when he was part of a mine rescue team that won two provincial titles.

Having watched his kids grow up playing sports on the North Shore, Dave has a special appreciation for Neptune's community partnerships, particularly those supporting youth sports.

Outside work, Dave enjoys golfing or fishing with family, making the most of the nearby outdoors and the sense of community he values on the North Shore.

Neptune’s commitment to the North Shore includes supporting the people and organizations that make it a healthier, more connected place to call home.

Our recent community investments include BabyGoRound, helping provide essential baby gear, diapers and clothing to North Shore families in need, and North Shore Avalanche, helping local girls and young women build skills, confidence and connections through hockey.

We’re also supporting PumpkinFest, held by Enhance West Van, a family-friendly tradition that brings neighbours together and raises funds for local programming.

These partnerships reflect our belief that community investment is most meaningful when it responds to local needs, strengthens relationships and contributes to a safer, more inclusive North Shore.

Team Neptune did it again.

On September 22, our Hat Trick Haulers crossed the YVR tarmac in 32.93 seconds, the fastest time of any team pulling a 67,000 pound aircraft 100 metres for Hope Air. The annual Haul for Hope fundraiser, hosted by YVR and Canadian charity Hope Air, helps Canadians who need to travel for medical treatment and care far from home, and we are proud to have raised $20,852 between our two teams.

Most importantly, all participating teams helped raise more than $125,000 this year, funds that go directly toward flights, accommodations, and ground transportation for Canadians who must travel for medical care.

Thank you to everyone who donated, cheered us on, and helped make this year's event a success.

September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to honour survivors of the residential school system and reflect on the journey toward reconciliation.

Neptune's terminal operates on the unceded ancestral territories of the Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh, and Musqueam Nations. We recognize this day as part of an ongoing responsibility to listen, learn, and reflect on the histories and experiences of Indigenous peoples across Canada.

Thank you to Indigenous Researcher Jordan Dawson for joining us this week to lead a workshop on Sḵwx̱wu̓7mesh language, where our team learned greetings, the village sites of the North Shore, and the stories of this land.

Reconciliation is not a single day but an ongoing commitment, and we remain dedicated to walking that path with humility and respect.

Today, we broke ground on a major upgrade to Neptune’s potash operations. Canpotex is investing CA$500 million to modernize critical infrastructure at our North Vancouver terminal, strengthening the long-term reliability, resiliency and performance of the facilities that move Saskatchewan potash through our terminal and onto vessels bound for international markets.

Representatives from the governments of Canada and Saskatchewan, the Port of Vancouver, and supply chain partners joined us for the groundbreaking of Canpotex’s largest-ever supply chain investment.

The project will replace and modernize essential marine and terminal infrastructure, including replacing the shiploaders, conveyors and the dumper pit necessary for unloading railcars and loading vessels. Construction is expected to support 400 to 500 jobs, with an estimated 85 to 90 per cent of project spending directed to Canadian suppliers and contractors. The work is expected to be completed in 2028, while potash shipments continue throughout construction.

As the world’s largest potash export terminal, Neptune plays a key role in getting Canadian potash to global markets. These upgrades will help us to continue that work for decades to come.
