This year has been all about growth 🌱

Alongside my art practice, I returned to school to study Fashion Design & Production at VCC—originally to learn beginner sewing for my Maglayag! project from my AGO × RBC Residency. What started as curiosity quickly grew into a deeper passion for garment-making and textile construction.

One of our term projects was a collaborative, gender-neutral T-shirt design. My original concept blends Filipino aesthetics with a classic Western silhouette. The final piece features a clean, minimal front with inverted box pleats at the neckline and gathered sleeves, while the back highlights my partner’s layered split-panel design.

Seeing this come to life has been incredibly rewarding—and I’m excited to share that the final version of my personal “Terno-shirt” shirt will be released next year—more information coming very soon.

Two other t-shirt designs from our cohort will be up for sale as well. All proceeds will go towards VCC’s Bursary and Financial Awards.

💐The second (larger) woven flower is underway 🌸

This piece is part of an ongoing commission series—large-scale, hand-woven from photographic prints—slowly taking shape for a local project set to be completed early next year.

Each work is built through layers of process, care, and conversation, allowing the material to respond to place, story, and time. Grateful to be trusted with bringing this vision to life—more to unfold soon.

✨ Open for 2026 Commissions ✨

I’m currently accepting new commission inquiries for 2026—custom woven works for public spaces, private collections, and site-responsive projects. If you have a vision you’d like to explore together, feel free to DM or email to start a conversation.

☆Karl Mata Hipol delves into historical and institutional archives, interweaving traditional Filipino patterns into iconic landscapes, and additionally utilizing experimental cyanotype prints as acts of intervention, protection, care, and cultural continuity. His process reframes these archival photographs as sites of resistance, reclaiming space and narrative through embodied reworking.

Walking to Know the Land at the Ranger Art Gallery is the second installment of a collaborative exhibition by Filipino Canadian artists and brothers Khim Mata Hipol and Karl Mata Hipol. Initially presented in 2023 at the Deer Lake Art Gallery, this re-exhibition brings together a selection of earlier works alongside newly created pieces that further expand the artists' exploration of land, belonging, and decolonial walking practices.

"Walking to Know the Land"
🗓 On view until July 6
🕰 Gallery Hours
Mon–Fri: 10 AM – 2 PM
Sat–Sun: 12 PM – 4 PM
