Alabama Story
by Kenneth Jones
Date: Tuesday February 24th, 2026
Time: 5:30 â 8:30pm
Location: North Bay Public Library â Auditorium
This is the true story of a banned childrenâs book. The story of a librarian who wanted to protect it. The story of a politician who wanted to burn it. The story of an illustrator who wanted to delight young readers.
Once upon a time there was a childrenâs picture book, âThe Rabbitsâ Wedding,â about a bunny with white fur who marries a bunny with black fur. Written and illustrated by Garth Williams, best known for his artwork for âCharlotteâs Webâ and the âLittle Houseâ books, it was published in 1958 at the height of the Civil Rights movement.
The play is set in 1959, and freely mixes fact, fiction, humour and drama.
As the Civil Rights movement is brewing in Montgomery, Alabama, a segregationist senator and the no-nonsense state librarian clash over the content of a childrenâs book about bunny rabbits. Meanwhile, a reunion of childhood friends â an African American man and a woman of white privilege â provides a private counterpoint to the public events swirling in the state capital. Political foes, star-crossed lovers, and one feisty childrenâs author inhabit a Deep South of the imagination that brims with humor, heartbreak, and hope. Inspired by true events.
A copy of the childrenâs book will be available at our script reading.
