There’s been a lot of new faces around here lately, so I thought I’d reintroduce myself.

I’m Valérie, founder of Bélisle Pottery.

This studio has always been about more than just me. It’s a community space shaped by an incredible team of instructors, assistants, technicians, and members who show up and make it what it is every day. I just happen to be the one who started it.

I come from a background in hospitality and fell into clay in a way that completely shifted my life. What began as a personal practice slowly turned into this space, one that continues to grow in ways I couldn’t have planned.

These days, the studio has become a team. A community. A creative little ecosystem inside an old public school in Virgil.

This season, we’re opening things up a little more. More behind the scenes, more of the people, more of what actually happens in here.

If you’ve been here for a while, thank you.
If you’re new, welcome. I’m really glad you’re here.

Robert is one of the pillars of this studio. The kind of person who puts himself last so everyone else can move forward. It’s rare, and it’s one of the greatest gifts we have. He started here as a student, determined to master the fundamentals, and it was clear early on that he had something much bigger ahead of him.

Over time, Robert became more than just a right hand in the studio. He became the left as well, showing up day in and day out to make sure everything runs the way it should. Quietly holding the space together, supporting every project, every person, every detail.

ABOUT THE MAKER

With a background in hospitality, Robert brings a deep sense of care, precision, and intention to his work. His focus is primarily on functional tableware, where form and usability meet a high level of craftsmanship. He works mainly on the wheel, exploring refined shapes while also pushing into more provocative and challenging forms.

His work also reflects a strong interest in glaze layering and combinations, building depth and subtle complexity into each piece. His attention to detail is unmatched, almost to a fault, and it shows in every surface, every edge, every decision.

An incredible teacher as well, Robert leads our industry nights on Mondays, creating a space that is welcoming, grounded, and deeply supportive for those learning the craft.

You can find his pieces in some of the finest establishments in the region, a reflection of both his technical skill and his understanding of how objects live within a dining experience.

Kelly has been with us since day one, our very first helper around the studio. What started as watering the plants quickly turned into being behind almost every detail that keeps this space running. She’s a true rock for the studio. The kind of person who slips in quietly, but whose presence is felt in every corner. Her care, attention to detail, and consistency shape the space in ways that often go unseen, but never unnoticed. It’s only natural that this same care carries through into her work.

ABOUT THE MAKER

Hello, I’m Kelly, OG studio elf.

My journey into pottery was unexpected. I started as a plant sitter while Val was away, back when Bélisle Pottery was still in its early stages. I was told to play with some clay if I felt like it. I went to YouTube, thought “yeah, I can do that,” and that was it. I fell in love with clay, the history of pottery, and all the practical things you can make with it.

I’m a handbuilder, inspired by rustic textures and functional pieces made to be shared. My work is rooted in warmth, simplicity, and everyday use. I’m now looking forward to taking the next step and sharing the craft through teaching.

Natacha has been with us since nearly the beginning, a steady and dedicated presence in the studio. Her perseverance is something you feel right away. She shows up fully, often putting others before herself, and brings a quiet strength to everything she does. Lately, she’s really found her creative groove, pushing her work in new directions and exploring ideas with confidence. As a fellow Franco-Ontarian, it’s always a pleasure to share moments in French in the studio. Over the past few months, she’s also stepped into a support role, and it’s been incredible to have her as part of the team.

ABOUT THE MAKER

Natacha of Clay & Cream Ceramics has always been a creative person, and pottery became the medium where she could turn that creativity into both expressive and functional work. Her love for all things vintage naturally led her to ceramics, as few practices capture the spirit of the 60s and 70s quite like working with clay. While nostalgia sparked her journey, she has developed a colourful and playful style of her own, often incorporating cheerful details that make each piece feel unique.

Her work explores a range of techniques including wheel throwing, hand building, surface decoration, glazing and underglazing, allowing her to build layers of colour and personality into each form. She enjoys experimenting with finishes and details that bring both function and character to everyday objects.

Ashley bringing a calm, gentle presence to the studio. Her time teaching the kids classes has been nothing short of wonderful to witness. Patient, kind, and quietly confident, she creates a space where people feel at ease. Her creativity also shaped the Fibre and Form workshop series, a thoughtful program we’re excited to bring back this fall. While she’ll be leaving the studio soon, she will be deeply missed. Her talent, warmth, and presence have left a lasting mark, and she will always be part of this community.

ABOUT THE MAKER

Ashley of Floraison Forms is a Niagara-based potter who blends her love of whimsy with pieces that make a house feel like a home. Each piece is wheel thrown and hand painted, with thoughtful designs inspired by the things she loves. Sylvia and Calvin, also known as Calvya (our mystery glaze), are the studio’s pottery power duo. Sylvia is often the first to raise her hand and step in wherever help is needed, while Calvin is always right there beside her, steady and supportive. They show up fully, for their work and for the people around them. The amount of care and effort they put into each piece is something you feel immediately. They are the kind of people you want on your team, in any room, any day.

ABOUT THE MAKER

SEAS POTTERY is a husband and wife duo inspired by bodies of water and the natural world: oceans, lakes, rivers, trees, humans, horses, mountains, and seas. Their ceramics are quirky and colourful, created to be taken along on everyday adventures.

Their work explores a range of surface techniques including carving, coloured clay, slip inlay, and layered glazing. Through these processes, they build depth, texture, and movement into each piece, allowing forms to feel both playful and expressive while remaining functional.

Athena is the kind of maker who will take reclaimed clay and turn it into a one metre tall vase, proving to everyone just how good our reclaim really is. She approaches her work with a quiet confidence and a deep sense of intention, always pushing herself a little further. Thoughtful, focused, and incredibly dedicated, she brings a calm strength to the studio that sets the tone for those around her. We’re constantly inspired by her discipline, her curiosity, and the way she shows up to her practice.

ABOUT THE MAKER

Athena Wang is a 2025 ceramic graduate from Fleming College. In a world of overconsumption, her work reflects a focus on intention and functionality, enhancing the relationship between individuals and the objects they use daily. Each piece is thoughtfully designed and crafted in stoneware, with an emphasis on elegance, refinement, and material awareness.

Her work explores repetition and pattern, drawing inspiration from nature such as dew on leaves, sunlight through clouds, and the venation of plants. Through carving, fluting, and layered applications of clay, she creates surfaces that balance precision with subtle variation, preserving the movement of glaze as it settles and transforms in the firing process.

Now working as an apprentice within the studio, Athena is expanding her practice beyond making, developing a deeper understanding of the business side of ceramics. This next phase marks a shift toward building a sustainable, intentional practice that bridges both craft and entrepreneurship.

Jill is insanely creative and has an eye for capturing beauty in a way that feels effortless. So many of the photos you see on our social media are hers. She’s generous with her time and talent, deeply dedicated, and the kind of person who quietly keeps going no matter what. Thoughtful, observant, and always creating, she’s a huge part of how this studio is seen and felt.

ABOUT THE MAKER

Jillian began her pottery journey while searching for a creative outlet to step away from an increasingly tech-filled world. What started as a simple hobby quickly grew into a passion for creating pieces that feel both personal and functional. Her work is often inspired by the quiet beauty of nature and her undeniable love for cats. Though more of an iced coffee girl herself, her goal is ultimately to make you your new favourite mug.
