It’s not too late to feel like an artist tomorrow as we choose from two different painting options @ Konzelmann Estate Winery! Which one would YOU want to paint?

This was my second visit with this group, and because I saw what they were capable of the first time, I wanted to give them a little challenge while keeping it beginner friendly. These bouquets are done in a painterly, impressionist style using the back of spoons instead of palette knives. The process is simple, fun, and the results are always satisfying.

I like creating projects that are easy to follow step by step but give visually pleasing results. Coming back to the group is always great because people feel more comfortable, the conversations flow, we laugh, and the time goes by quickly.

If you ever find yourself in a retirement home, would you want art workshops like this as part of your recreational activities?

This was my first time at this facility, and whenever I’m with a new group of residents I never know quite what to expect. Everyone has a different range of abilities, physical or cognitive, and I rarely get any background ahead of time.

My approach is to start with something really attainable for everyone. That way, no matter who is in front of me, there is a starting point that feels doable. From there, I can get a sense of the group and adjust for the next time.

For this visit, we painted oceanscapes. Each one turned out beautifully, each in its own way.

I always tell the group that I am going to make a lot of suggestions, but I only have one rule: have fun. I also tell them I will support them if they need support, and I like to joke that what happens in art class stays in art class. Nobody else needs to know.

One of the best parts is when I come back and my little artists tell me how much their families loved the art they created. That never gets old. 💙

This was one of the projects from my weekly sessions. Yes, the residents leave with a painting they can be proud of, but these sessions are about so much more than the art. I look forward to seeing my little artists each week, and they look forward to seeing me. Together we are building relationships, creating, and having fun in the process.

With this group, many of the residents have significant limitations. Because I see them regularly, I get to know what’s hard for them, what’s attainable, and where we can gently push their limits. For this piece, I pre-cut the shapes of the sailboats and taped off the horizon so they could focus on painting the sky and the sea.

It may look simple, but for them it was engaging and achievable. Some residents struggle to grip a brush or to stay focused, so I make sure their workstations are set up in a way that feels comfortable and supportive. And when someone feels overwhelmed, I step in to guide them hand-over-hand or just offer encouragement.
