"FOUNTAIN OF LOVE" - When we moved to the farm we discovered beyond the rose garden a lovely old lily pond with a cherub fountain. Hidden by ancient bows of cedar, and cascades of English Ivy, it was truly the makings of a future painting. Rendering himself as Tanya's most available audience, Nathan is never quite sure whether to spontaneously indulge in her mischief making, or play the responsible big brother and report the inappropriate behaviour. However at times like these there is no choice but to lovingly approve, and then join in!

“SPEAKING IF SPRING” - This scene was painted while I lived in Toronto. As confining as the city seems to me now, I still find pleasure in walking the backstreets and observing lifestyles, "Neighbour" not only means someone next door, it can mean someone upstairs or downstairs!
My own little apartment was an oasis in the midst of city life; Cabbagetown was a short bike ride away, and it became a focal point for many of my city scapes.
It was always fun to discover that neighbours are the same everywhere ... in passing, we always talk about the weather, and its always a joy to speak of spring!

“ANTICIPATION” - When I was about Nathan’s age I thought that a cutter sleigh would make a fine bed. In all its whimsy it could take off from the window to visit the moon and stars. Some friends of ours had such a sleigh on their farm. When Nathan sat in it, he looked up and whispered, “Is this Santa’s sleigh?” In thoughtful anticipation he held on, ready to go anywhere that fantasy might taken him.

TO THE BEACH - In Florida we always head to the beach with anxious anticipation. While ocean breezes spur everyone else to a quick pace, I'm content to linger behind, watching moments unfold.

“GARDEN ANGEL” - Often I would send Whitney out into the garden to pick flowers for the dinner table. Although she was very adept with scissors I nonetheless prayed that such trips into the garden would be accident free! As a mother I often relied on Psalm 91, verse 11 ...
"For He shall give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all they ways".
Whitney seemed to think that the bigger the bouquet, the bigger my smile and hug would be, and indeed she was right! Happily and feverishly she would clip away, but because she was an observant little one, just about anything would catch her eye and cause her to ponder. Sometimes the garden statuary, especially the garden angels, seemed to make flower picking a time of great lingering. It is no wonder then, that most of her wonderful drawings were of angels!
If angels are God's messengers, then truly our Whitney was a great listener. With words unspoken, some inward conversation always seemed to ensue. And if angels are also guardians then Psalm 91, verse 11 calmed me and yes, always brought a smile to my face!

ALL IS CALM - On Christmas night, it has become a tradition in our family to go for a long winters walk after dinner. As snowflakes gently fall, one is easily tempted to linger longer outside, in spite of a much anticipated dessert inside! For while the rose garden softly lies sleeping, little lanterns light the path to a place of silence and calm.
Oh how it reminds me of that reassuring verse from Psalm 119:105,
"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path."
May God's Light fill your Christmas with special blessings for the year to come.

"THE PERFECT GENTLEMAN" - We were all there when Whitney met this clown, and my first sketch reflected this actual scene. But in the final painting I decided the centre of attention should be that precious moment when the perfect gentleman took off his hat, bowed down, and kissed her hand ever so graciously.
