MARKET DAY - I can still hear the clunk-clunk of the old wagon wheels rolling over the well worn side walk.
When we first moved from the country into a small town, it was such a welcomed change to walk to the market, almost daily. Although it was reminiscent of my European days, how different it is when children come along to "help".
After each chooses their favourite cereal, and I my favourite flowers, we head home. But ever since Tanya was a year old, she has never made it all the way home without indulging in the French Bread.

"SCHOOL DAYS" - Like all little boys, Nathan loves to splash through puddles with his bare feet.
Even while painting this piece I knew that I would title it "School Days". What I didn't know was that it illustrated the lyrics of the old song "School Days" ... "You were my bashful barefoot beau, I was your queen in calico ..." I found this very rare coincidence to be very amusing.

“ANTICIPATION” - When I was about Nathan’s age I thought that a cutter sleigh would make a fine bed. In all its whimsy it could take off from the window to visit the moon and stars. Some friends of ours had such a sleigh on their farm. When Nathan sat in it, he looked up and whispered, “Is this Santa’s sleigh?” In thoughtful anticipation he held on, ready to go anywhere that fantasy might taken him.

“EVENING SKATERS” - As children, we walked by the light of the moon through the woods and across a crystal field to reach the pond for an evening of skating. On other nights, our father took us to the town park where lamp lights glowed through snow flakes and the ice shimmered as town folk waltzed around the rink. These images have stayed with me and were destined to become a painting one day.
Little did I know that once upon a time, Simcoe Park in Niagara on the Lake also had a rink where town folk waltzed to music and children found a space for sport! Moonlight and lamplight came together as I sketched the memories that enchanted me, to become “Evening Skaters”.

THE MUSIC PARLOUR - Along the country back-roads of our beloved stomping grounds, was a home that always intrigued us. One day we magnetically ventured up the long lane and found Chester repairing his tractor. He was about 80 years old, and we soon learned that he had lived there since his birth.
It was like discovering a buried treasure, because everything in the home was untouched by the hands of time. He led me to the music parlour and told me that his sister was the only one who used to play piano. As you can see I stepped into this room and believed that it was a Sunday afternoon at the turn of the century!

THE RECITAL - A home somehow has an added dimension or a new life when a piano moves in. Frequently, from the music room, come sounds of Nathan's little compositions. His interest and love for it has given all of us much pleasure. Tanya is more "vocal" and sings constantly ... her voice is her instrument, whether its in tune or not! For a while, we had started a little ritual of recitals, for an invisible audience. They would take turns performing for Mommy and Whitney. It is wonderful watching them "compete". But for this recital, I believed they were in perfect harmony.
