What a wonderful turnout to the Aurora Street Festival on Sunday and I’m not just talking about the crowd of over 10,000 who wander through but those who came to help with our booth to help us promote the Newmarket International Festival of One Act Plays! Starting with Darryl Erentzen, Yaroslawa Koretchuk and son Oleg and Osawa Muskwa who arrived first thing in the morning to help wrestle the tent up and batten down the hatches to the wind! Others came throughout the day as well including who won best actor in a female role last year who also sang on our new sound system entertaining attendees and other nearby booths with her wonderful voice as well as Marlene Charney, Burrows and Karry Moore who rounded out the shifts on a hot day. Thank you all so much!

The day started out slow as we at first couldn’t get out new sound system wireless mics working but eventually did and after that we were able to address the crowd including Osawa talking about how community theatre helped catapult him into a tv and film career and then invite passersby to sign up for auditions, as volunteers or to win tickets to the festival, along with a beautiful bouquet of hand crafted aromatherapy soy candles made by Yaro our long time volunteer!

A great event and day!

Tom out!

Staged Reading

Our first staged reading for the 2026 season- “Unbridled Fear” by Donald Loftus of New York City will be held at the Seniors Expo, Newmarket Comunity Center, 200 Duncan Dr Fri June 5 at 10:45 am.

A confused young bride named Ruby suddenly finds herself inside a surreal circus tent, clutching a frying pan and dressed in her wedding
gown. She encounters Wankie the Clown, a sardonic figure with a
permanent frown, who becomes her unlikely guide through a fog of fear and self-doubt. As Ruby tries to recall how she got there, fragments of her wedding day return—her walk down the aisle, her sudden terror, and her fainting spell at the altar. Through some seriously philosophical,
and absurd dialogue, Wankie helps her confront her “unbridled fear” of commitment and the unknown future. In the end, Ruby learns that—like
the circus itself—marriage is a daring act of faith and balance. But what will she do?!

Unbridled Fear will be read by Tom Pearson and Marlene Charney.

I spent hours today, along with our Web King, Darryl Erentzen organizing all the latest info about the 2026 Festival together in order for it to be assembled online.

The thing is, when you’re making such information “live online”, you have to make sure all the little things are correct. Do you have the exact name of the play correct, or info on where the playwright is from, and most importantly, their name is spelt correctly. Don’t laugh I’ve seen it…er done it lol.. Okay do laugh! So we’re not quite where we plan to land yet but the pertinent information is there now.

Tickets?

Although it’s a tad early to worry about purchasing tickets quite yet, we’re just in the process of setting those up - and to that end we do plan for early-bird festival pass specials very soon!

It’s a lot of work combing through everything . A challenge at times. But it’s a necessary evil and often can be fun too. It seems also we are attracting new awesome talent for our volunteer pool and that’s encouraging as well.

I urge you to check into our website to stay updated. And besides, the “clicks” help us optimize which helps us to reach others who may have the same passion about theatre as you. And I promise you this year’s plays and staged readings are going to be amazing!

It’s National volunteer week!

The value that live theatre adds to a community is immeasurable - like promoting a sence of community while allowing everyone to express themselves in a judgement free environment and promoting education and teamwork creatively towards a common goal or creating a spark for social change - as live theatre acts as a support mechanism for cast members like a family - to never seeing an exact same performance twice as it is ever-evolving. Yes, with live theatre you get an authentic and different experience every night! In the case of the Newmarket International Festival of One Act Plays you also get to see and experience new, including often world premieres of plays coming to Newmarket from playwrights around the world!
