A couple of weeks ago the steering on our Outrun stopped working. Knowing how complicated this controller is, this is something that we dreaded.
When opened it was apparent that it had essentially exploded, possibly when a spring broke, leaving broken parts and bent metal in its aftermath. In the photos I have circled where two gears were missing. The other two gears were also broken along with a very specific spring.
Fortunately the files for the gears were available on the internet. We 3D printed some test gears and then had them printed in carbon fiber (thanks Jordan). Hopefully they hold up just as well as the original nylon parts.
Last year we inherited literally thousands of new old stock arcade parts but we haven't had a chance to go through it. So while we could have ordered a set of new old stock springs online, we took a dive into the boxes and were lucky to find the springs!
So after a couple of frustrating days of drilling out screws, straightening metal and putting this complex steering mechanism back together, Outrun is back and better than ever.
