North Fraser Metis Association North Fraser Metis Association, a Registered Charity Organization Check out our upcoming events page to see what is coming up next!

Our organization is a non profit indigenous community that organizes cultural and historical activities and programs for Metis people every year. As on organization, we are often a first point of contact for Indigenous people seeking services and supports. To this end, we are working to build a continuum of care for people from birth to death and welcome feedback and guidance from our members on

new programs and new roads we should take. Our nonprofit organization has heard and recognized the biggest concerns of our communities and is willing to find ways to strengthen the bonds with our indigenous family in all regions of BC; to reconnect in a world that is exceedingly disconnected. Not only that, but we also heard and that depression and anxiety are very real and can be debilitating for some especially in the times of pandemic. We also recognized that finances and budgets can feel overwhelming at a times for those who are struggling in finding a job. Thus, it is our hope to receive grants and supports to address some of the key issues that we all have in common. We are eager to help, educate, support, provide, guidance, and pass through our culture and traditions in many ways to our indigenous family and to the next generation to be better and stronger than we are now. Our Mission:

Above all, to preserve our natural resources, cultural heritage, and Indigenous rights for the benefit of our children and the generation to follow
To build a community for our Members
To promote the health of our Members
To advance the cultural, economic, political, and social interests of our Members and Métis Nation
To educate our Members and the public about the history, culture, and identity of the Métis Nation
To work with colonial governments, Indigenous governments, and other bodies for the benefit of our Members and the Métis Nation

In pursuit of those goals, the directors and community volunteers run several events per year. These events vary in scope and focus but are all targeted to ensuring the vibrancy and growth of our community. Some recent events we have run include jigging workshops, history and culture education events, and networking and community building gatherings for Métis families.

Redefining the Métis experience in modern literature

In this episode of the Métis Speaker Series, we sit down with award-winning Michif writer Katherena Vermette for a profound exploration of identity and history. From her roots in Winnipeg’s North End to becoming a leading voice in Canadian literature, Katherena discusses her mission to fill the gaps of Métis history through her works like “A Girl Called Echo” and her latest novel, “Real Ones”. She emphasizes the power of seeing oneself in books and celebrating achievements from fellow Métis authors stepping up and taking up space.

Tune in to hear how she uses storytelling as a portal to the past and why she chooses to center the work over her persona in her pursuit of authentic, human-centred narratives.

MNBC invites you to join us in celebrating and honouring National Indigenous Peoples Day (NIPD). A day dedicated to recognizing the diverse cultures, traditions, languages, and contributions of Métis, First Nations, and Inuit peoples across Canada.

For Métis people, this is also a time to celebrate the unique stories, identity, and resilience of our Nation, and to recognize the many ways Métis communities, language, and culture continue to thrive today.

We encourage everyone to deepen their understanding of Indigenous histories and cultures, support Indigenous-led events and businesses, and reflect on the enduring connection Indigenous Peoples have maintained with these lands since time immemorial.

To continue your learning journey, visit the Amelia Douglas Institute online or in person to explore Métis stories, language, and cultural resources.
