Join Las Llamadas Del Flamenco at 6:00 at this amazing fundraiser on March 9th!
This fundraiser takes place on the unceded, ancestral, territorial land of the Sinixt. Guided by the Autonomous Sinixt Smum Iem law, which translates to “belongs to the women”.
Our theme for Women’s Day this year is Red Dress. It is an invitation for us to wear all red to this event, in honor of the memories of stolen Indigenous women and girls across these lands. Red - is the colour of many things. Blood, Anger, Love.. The Red Dress is a reflection of power and strength of Indigenous Girls, Women and Two-Spirited People. It is said the only color Spirit sees is red - by wearing red we are guiding our lost souls back home. We acknowledge the pain experienced by our beloved Indigenous communities. We wear red to create space for grieving and healing. By wearing red - we are taking a stand for the rights, equity and justice of Indigenous sisters.
We would also like to honour the women and girls around the world who break the social, economic, cultural and political barriers everyday, both seen and unseen.
We are fundraising for Sinixt matriarch, Taress Alexis. She is the daughter of Matriarch of smum iem Marilyn James, single mother of Nava and Rocco. Taress was recently diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer and is currently on palliative chemo. She needs help; financial support is one way we can show up for her. Find out more about Taress’s story at https://www.bloodoflifecollective.org/
We will have a raffle with art by Bubzee, Nicole Hobbs, and Steph Kellet. Thank you to these lovelies who have donated their beautiful creations. For every $15 donated, you get one raffle ticket. You can decide which bundle of items you want to put it towards when you arrive at the event.
Shamim and Ruby will be cooking up a large batch of vegetarian/vegan soup and fresh baked bread, so come early, bring a bowl and a spoon and enjoy some food while listening to Avery Florence. Dinner will be served at 6pm. You don’t want to miss the beautiful performances lined up for you. After dinner, we are so lucky to have Ms. Iriz Wilde lead us through a “Burlesque 101” workshop. This is the Burlesque Embodiment Experience you never knew you needed. Maybe you’ll learn a sexy move or two to bring to the dance floor! We’ve got 3 DJs for 3 hours of dancing until 10pm, where we will celebrate movement and expression. Then to wind back down again, we will listen to nourishing voices of our acoustic performers. Zoë Zum will be painting LIVE throughout the evening! Art by Eileen Nicolina, Maasa Laclerc-Craig, and Kelly Shpeley will be on display. We are exploring a new structure for our evening as we want to encourage a more chill environment and respect the wishes of our neighbours. We hope you will embrace it alongside us. Let’s empower and uplift one another, celebrate all that we are, and our beauty and strength as a collective.
