It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Executive Director Jennifer Neal Dunkerson. Jennifer passed away on Sunday, June 14th, with her husband Darrin by her side, following a diagnosis of mesothelioma.
Jennifer served as the Museum's Executive Director from November 2023 until her medical leave beginning March 2026. She brought genuine passion to the museum and heritage sectors, including many years with and representation at the City of Nelson, British Columbia's Cultural Development Committee and Heritage Working Group. She valued the careful, considered work done at those tables to protect and preserve the history and heritage of our region.
As a leader, Jennifer was calm, giving, and steadfast. She encouraged staff to bring their authentic selves and unique talents to their work and supported the staff and board in doing good work for the Nelson Museum, the town, and the communities it serves.
Jennifer always lit up when talking about her children, Adrian and Addy — both of whom worked at the museum before she did. She was proud of the people they had become and looked forward to seeing all they would do. She also leaves behind her husband Darrin, his two children, and her siblings and father.
The staff, board, and volunteers of the Nelson Museum extend their deepest condolences to Jennifer's family, and to all in our community who knew and worked alongside her. We invite the public to join us on Saturday, June 20th from 4:30 - 6:30pm for a celebration of life hosted at the Nelson Museum in collaboration with her family, where all are welcome to share their memories and stories of Jennifer.
