Unleashed Heart is proud to present Amy Herzog’s Mary Jane, a powerful playreading about caregiving, resilience, grief, humour, and the women who hold each other up when life becomes impossible.

Praised by The New York Times as “the most profound and harrowing of Ms. Herzog’s many fine plays,” Mary Jane is an intimate portrait of a single mother caring for her medically fragile son, surrounded by a community of women who become her lifeline.

On Sunday night, we gathered the cast of The Last Frontier and read through the play for the first time, singing along with the fabulous tracks that Kyle Friesen has prepared for us. There were tears, there was laughter, there was applause. I am so excited for the months to come and the discoveries we will make in rehearsal. Feeling blessed.
One special moment, as the cast was singing O White Pine, outside the window, the seabirds were racing over the surf, the mountains of the mainland in the background glowing in the sunset and I swear to God I could hear Beth say, as she did so many times, “We live here.” We do indeed, my love. Thank you for this beautiful music.

What a beautiful way to begin ✨

Opening night of Voices Unbound at the Parksville Museum was a full house — and full hearts. An incredible evening of spoken word, courage, laughter and connection, brought to life by a group of talented young performers under the thoughtful direction of Jennifer Kelly.

This was the first of two nights for our inaugural Voices Unbound Youth Showcase, and what a powerful start it was. Each voice was unique, honest, and deeply felt — a reminder of just how important it is to create space for young people to be seen and heard.

Beyond the performances, this evening also marks the beginning of something meaningful. Proceeds from this showcase will go toward building the Beth DeVolder Voices Unbound Scholarship, supporting future generations of artists in finding and trusting their voice.

Grateful. Inspired. And so proud of these young performers.
