Art and Culture Tours typically take place in May, and are open to students and the general public. Vancouver Island University Professor Jane Cole has organized and led Art and Culture tours and overseas study to Europe, the Middle East and North Africa since 2004. Trip itineraries vary and are designed to reflect a focus on art and culture. A travel company is hired to oversee the logistics of travel which include accommodation and transportation. Tour groups vary in size, with a maximum of 36 participants. As an instructor of art history, Jane has an in-depth knowledge of European, Islamic, modern and contemporary art. Her personal research is in the fields of painting and drawing, and she has exhibited in both Canada and the United States. Jane has served as both a past Chair of the Department of Art and Design at Vancouver Island University, and as a past Director/Curator of the Nanaimo Art Gallery.
