𝗔 𝘄𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝘆 𝟱-𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗚𝗮𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗮 𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱.
The beautiful evening light of the West Coast definitely inspired everyone yesterday as we gathered together for the first evening.

Today we begin with plein air painting, along with compositional and drawing exercises out in the landscape.

A big thank you to everyone who traveled from so many corners of Canada and around the world to be part of this workshop. Looking forward to a great week of painting, learning, and sharing the creative experience together.

One of my recent paintings, this time inspired by the burned boreal forests of eastern Yukon on the way toward Nahanni National Park Reserve.
'𝗚𝗛𝗢𝗦𝗧 𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗧' 𝟯𝟬" 𝘅 𝟲𝟬" 𝗼𝗶𝗹 𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘃𝗮𝘀

I’ve always been fascinated by the cycle of destruction and renewal in nature. What looks burned and lifeless at first slowly becomes full of colour and new growth returning to the forest floor, contrasting beautifully against the charred remains from fires years before.

There’s something powerful and inspiring about seeing the resilience of the northern wilderness and how life always finds its way back.

Exploring the Kootenays, I’m always drawn to old rural structures slowly becoming part of the landscape around them. Weathered barns, leaning fences, and aging buildings seem to carry the history of the land itself.

When I’m out there, I often begin with quick drawings to establish the overall design and movement of the composition. Those small sketches help me simplify shapes, explore brushwork ideas, and push the painting toward a more abstract interpretation while still holding onto the feeling of the place. It’s one of my favorite parts of the creative process — finding that balance between observation and simplification.

Always loved looking at the mountains from the air, especially during sunrise. There’s something inspiring about seeing the Rockies slowly light up from above — all the ridges, valleys, and wilderness stretching into the distance.

This new painting was inspired by flying from Calgary and thinking about all the hikes, adventures, and painting trips I’ve had down there over the years. Funny how seeing the landscape from a completely different perspective brings back so many memories.

Beautiful day on the coast thus week, capturing the light and patterns along the beach looking out toward the Coast Mountains on the horizon. Really loving the abstract patterns the shifting light and shadows create, especially when contrasted with thicker paint application and semitransparent washes to build atmosphere and a sense of distance in the landscape. Days like this always recharge the creative energy.

I am very happy to announce that three of my paintings were juried into the 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟕 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿 𝗘𝘅𝗵𝗶𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀.

The online exhibition will be open from June 1–30, 2026. The selected works for the 2027 calendar cover and the featured paintings for each month will be announced then.

One of my recent large studio paintings, 𝗥𝗜𝗦𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗪𝗢𝗢𝗗𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗦 𝟰𝟴" 𝘅 𝟰𝟴", inspired by early fall along the Yukon River.

This area was once heavily burned by wildfire, but over time the forest has slowly been coming back to life. The new growth creates amazing mosaics of colour, patterns, and textures across the landscape, especially in autumn.

One of the things I love most about painting the North is seeing how wild landscapes constantly change and renew themselves. There is always something new to discover in the wilderness.
