Dominik Modlinski - Artist

Dominik J. Modlinski is a Canadian Landscape Artist I am a Canadian landscape artist.

My painting journeys are a wilderness experience based upon weeks of traveling rugged and barren lands to capture in plein air style the majesty of nature. My northern travels have inspired me to explore further and visit many of earth last remaining wilderness areas. Some of the most extreme painting expeditions took me across continents and hemispheres such as Antarctica, High Arctic, Greenland, Patagonia , into the wilds of Namibia, South Africa , Bolivia and Peru. As I witness disappearance of wilderness around the globe, my quest is to portray a need to preserve the beauty of our planet and inspire people to do so through my paintings, photographs, stories and videos.

A few recent plein air paintings from my time here in the Rockies. 🎨🏔️

Being here for my solo show at Canada House Gallery has also given me a great excuse to spend as much time as possible outside painting.

Nothing beats setting up the easel in front of the real thing — chasing the light, colour and atmosphere and just responding to what’s happening in front of me.

Some of these little paintings may eventually inspire much larger studio works, but for now I’m just enjoying being out here, painting and exploring.

Another great plein air workshop in the Rockies! 🎨🏔️

Thank you everyone for coming from so many different places to paint together. Such a great group, lots of laughs, lots of painting, and plenty of Rockies weather!

We were especially lucky with the fall colours this year — they were absolutely spectacular.

𝗡𝗼𝘄 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀.
This fall, I’m opening my studio to a limited number of new commissions for late 2026 and the New Year.

Over the years, I’ve built an extensive collection of photographs, sketches, plein air studies and ideas from my travels across the Canadian Rockies, West Coast, Yukon, Alaska and other wilderness regions.
For most commissions, I draw from my own reference material and experiences on the land, working with the collector to choose a landscape, mood, composition and scale that speaks to them.
From there, I develop the idea into an original studio painting—using the reference as a starting point, but allowing colour, expressive brushwork, texture and imagination to take the painting somewhere beyond the photograph.

Capturing Valhalla Provincial Park from across the lake. The recent burn on the hillside creates such a striking contrast against the mountains and water. Nature is always changing—and there’s always something new to paint. 🎨🏔️

Yesterday hike, over 1,000 meters of elevation gain, but totally worth it!
Amazing scenery up there and lots of inspiration for future studio paintings. Sometimes you just have to work a little harder for the good views!

Nice to take a big breath and relax after all the intensity of putting my big show together in Banff.

Now I’m back to what I love most—being out on the land, exploring and looking for inspiration.

It always pays to be in the right place at the right time.

The fall colours are incredible, the light is beautiful, and I’m gathering lots of photo references and ideas for future paintings.

Feels good to just be back out there. 🍂🏔️🎨

I’m excited to be returning to beautiful 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗮 𝗕𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗮 𝗔𝗿𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁
in San Blas, Mexico for another painting workshop.

𝗙𝗲𝗯𝗿𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟭𝟳–𝟮𝟳, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟳
𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗮 𝗕𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗮 𝗔𝗿𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 — 𝗦𝗮𝗻 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝘀, 𝗠𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗰𝗼

Ten days dedicated to painting, creativity, and inspiration in a relaxed tropical setting.

Throughout the workshop, I’ll share the painting methods I’ve developed over many years of working both in the studio and on location. We’ll explore colour harmony, expressive brushwork, mark-making, composition, plein air sketching, and ways of moving beyond simply copying a reference to create a more personal response to the landscape.

Each day will include demonstrations, hands-on exercises, individual guidance and critiques. As the workshop progresses, we’ll build toward more ambitious paintings inspired by the colours, atmosphere and landscape of Mexico.

My goal is not to teach you to paint like me, but to help you discover ways to make your own paintings stronger, more expressive and more personal.

And while we’ll work hard, this is Mexico! 🌴☀️ There will be plenty of time to enjoy the surroundings, share stories, connect with other artists and simply enjoy being immersed in painting for ten wonderful days.

𝗙𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆.
I’ve been looking through old photographs from the past 30+ years of my art career. I began painting and exhibiting professionally in 1993, right after graduating from the Ontario College of Art in Toronto. Looking back now, it’s incredible to think of all the places this journey has taken me.

When I arrived in Canada in 1987 at the age of 16, I could never have imagined the life that would unfold here. Canada has given me so much — a home, opportunities, friendships, and an endless landscape that has inspired my work for more than three decades.

Through painting, I’ve had the privilege of experiencing some of the most extraordinary landscapes across this country and around the world. I’m also grateful that along the way I’ve been able to give something back — contributing to Canada’s cultural and artistic community and sharing what I’ve learned through teaching hundreds of students over the years.

And today feels like a very special milestone.

More than anything, today I’m simply happy and grateful — for the journey, for the people I’ve met along the way, for everyone who has supported and collected my work, and for the privilege of continuing to do what I love.

Catching some amazing weather here in Canmore and squeezing in one more plein air painting before my exhibition opens this weekend at Canada House Gallery in Banff.

I love these quiet days in the mountains—painting alone, surrounded by incredible scenery, and just having fun pushing the boundaries of colour, texture, and brushwork.

Finally, the weather cooperated yesterday! I got to do a hike that’s been on my bucket list for a long time — 𝗔𝗯𝗯𝗼𝘁𝘁 𝗥𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗚𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝗥𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘀.

What a hike and what incredible scenery! The higher you go, the better it gets. Huge peaks, glaciers and amazing views everywhere you look.

A good climb, tired legs, and absolutely worth it. Days like this are exactly why I love being in the mountains. And yes… lots of painting inspiration along the way!
