Thank you to everyone who attended the ‘Dinner & Art for a Cause’ auction on May 25 in support of the Nanaimo General Regional Hospital’s Future Cardiac Cath Lab. The event was able to raise $4,012.00!

We are beyond appreciative of everyone who participated in bringing this event to fruition. We would like to extend our biggest and most grateful thank yous to the incredible artists who donated some of their profits from the auction, as well as to the artists who directly offered their art as gifts to the auction. We also want to thank Turley’s Florists for providing beautiful center pieces for the tables. And of course, we want to thank the Bold Knight restaurant and their wonderful staff for hosting us.

Another special thanks to those who donated directly to the cause and Tina Moreira -- the Manager Corporate & Community Engagement at the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation -- who managed the direct donations.

We look forward to seeing you at our next event!

"The Mischievous Bumble Bee" and "Mufasa" are two watercolour paintings by Elena Olsen that will be available at auction at the 'Dinner & Art for a Cause' event on May 25th, at the Bold Knight Restaurant!

In an email, Elena Olsen said, "Ever since I was a child, I have loved art and drawing. As a child, I took many art courses and classes over the years. When I was eight, we lived in Courtney, in Comox, and my parents took me to an art studio called The Four Cats!
At the Four Cats Studio, our teacher had taught us everything about art, even art history. ..... When we moved to Vernon, my parents moved me to another art studio called the Art Centre! At the art centre, I did both music and art. But more into art, our teachers have taught us about all the different kinds of art media! ..... Eventually, we moved to Nanaimo. I started to go to Art Escapes. Robyn has helped me with my acrylic painting skills and my clay modelling. ..... After finishing all my schooling, I moved on to college to become an artist. I am a motivated, dedicated, and highly skilled artist! And I am ready to move on to the bigger projects of becoming an artist!"

“Queen Bee" by Lisa Rickwood is a mixed media oil painting on canvas based on a photograph that Lisa took of the exact moment a bumblebee connected with a flower to gain nectar. It is available for purchase via the auction at the Bold Knight Restaurant on May 25th, 2026.

As well as being a visual artist, Lisa is an author, and recently published her second book, "Tech-Free Vacations for Your Busy Life", which will also be available on the 25th.

“Sunrise On Long Lake” is an oil painting by Derek Rickwood that depicts a landscape view of Long Lake in Nanaimo. It will be available to purchase at auction at the Bold Knight restaurant on May 25th.

Rickwood is an oil painter based on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Since the 1980s, he has worked as commissioned painter, completing works for individuals, organizations and businesses. For more information, check out his personal website: https://www.derekrickwood.com/index.htm

Rickwood also founded a contemporary art form called ‘Cause Art Plus’. This art form is based around outcome, with goals of supporting and creating positive outcomes for humanitarian, natural and environmental causes. Blaise Hunter is a communications strategist, multi-award-winning writer, human rights expert, Mother of Purpose, and Breaker of Chains.

"Just Breathe" by Greg McRae is a photograph that speaks to the tranquility of the nature on Vancouver Island. McRae explained to me, "having grown up on Vancouver Island my forte is landscape photography. "Just Breathe" was taken at Nile Creek/Bowser about a 1hr hike west of the Inland Hwy 19. We all need nature once a week for the body & soul."

"Just Breathe" will be featured at the 'Dinner & Art for a Cause' auction at the Bold Knight Restaurant on May 25th. Reservations are still available if you would like to attend!

Hello again everyone, I wanted to share more about the beginning of ‘Dinner & Art for a Cause.’

The inspiration for ‘Dinner & Art for a Cause’ began in 1994, when Derek and Lisa Rickwood’s son had a terrible reaction to his first-year shots. Their son was rushed to the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH) where it was discovered he had an atypical seizure. Unfortunately, at the time, the NRGH didn’t have the proper facilities to care for him, so was he flown to BC Children’s Hospital later in the day.

The dedication of the doctors and nurses of the BC Children’s Hospital inspired Derek. He was so grateful for what they did for his family, and what they do for all children, that it led him to looking for ways to support the hospital.

So, in collaboration with a local restaurant and some artists, the first ‘Dinner & Art for a Cause’ event was held, with art auction proceeds going towards the BC Children’s Hospital.

Since then, Derek has held many ‘Dinner & Art for a Cause’ events supporting different Humanitarian causes. The most recent of which will be held on May 25th, 2026, at the Bold Knight restaurant. This event will be in support of Nanaimo Regional General Hospital’s Future Cardiac Cath Lab, and still has reservations spots available.

Hello!

My name is Amelia, and I've just joined the "Dinner & Art for a Cause" project. I wanted to create this page to share more about "Dinner and Art for a Cause", promote future events, and connect with the community!

We would like to invite you, your family and friends to an upcoming fundraiser supporting the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital’s Future Cardiac Cath Lab, at the Bold Knight restaurant on Monday, May 25th, 2026.

Funds for the Future Cardiac Cath Lab are raised from art sales by a silent auction, and by direct donations at our event.

If you're interested in coming to support the Future Cardiac Cath Lab, as well as the artists who are showcased, you can attend by booking a reservation at the Bold Knight restaurant for 5:30 that night, and then emailing Derek Rickwood at his email address: [email protected], that you are attending. There are only about 20 spots left, so reserve your spot now!
