Nico Rhodes 2020

Born in Vancouver in 1989, Nico was raised on the road, touring with his parents and a quartet of musicians who nurtured his musical upbringing ‘by osmosis’. By the age of 16 he had won several classical piano and jazz saxophone competitions. At 17, he was introduced to musical theatre and he has since directed, arranged and/or composed for more than 40 stage productions across C

anada. At the age of 25, he orchestrated two symphonic shows, one being his Mother, Joelle Rabu’s nationally treasured musical drama ‘Tonight…Piaf’. Praises include Jessie and Ovation Theatre Award nominations for innovative music direction in Vancouver’s theatre community, and Nanaimo’s Emerging Cultural Leader Award. His career also includes performing with songstress Joelle Rabu, his Mother and being the other half of Roots & Grooves with the iconic Rick Scott. Nico is currently composing the music for the epic Off the Beaten Path musical: An International multi-platform theatrical experience like no other. He has also created a solo piano concert series The Art of Ragtime, featuring the many treasured songs and fascinating stories of the Ragtime era. Nico is sought after as a music director, composer and arranger of musical theatre, orchestral and choral works. One of his dreams is to create several community choirs, each celebrating life’s many diverse ages, genders and abilities while promoting inclusivity for all. He is also a devotee of the Elders’ community; fundraising, knitting, playing for them in support of Mental Health awareness.

Have you enjoyed any live music lately? I've seen 2 shows lately that have blown me away!

UPU at the Port Theatre was INCREDIBLE. Political, sensational, heart wrenching. It spoke to the power of decolonization, community and tradition.

She Composed Herself, a workshop performance by Alexandra Lee had me in tears, and I only got to see the first quarter!!

What are some shows you've enjoyed lately? Let's fill the comments with gratitude and celebration!

Today only with the Vancouver Island Symphony, I have the joy and privilege of performing with Joelle Rabu . Music for a new family show created for the Cuban Festival called “Cuba in her Carry on”

Perfect for the young and young at heart. Featuring a wonderous kids choir directed by one of my idols, Patricia Plumley.

See you there! At the Port :)

Art is pointless. And that's why it matters.

So much of life is about "the point". Making money, building structures, accruing power, etc etc. I have to go do X to get Y to build Z...

But Art? Art is pointless, and that's why it's so important.

There is joy, bliss and connection in the pointless. We do it not because it must be done, but because we WANT it in our lives. We don't do it out of exploitation, out of survival, out of desperation, out of duress, out of need (in the material) sense. We do it, and engage with it out of a Human need, you could even say a spiritual need (I've always been agnostic, but the piano is my church)

We seek it out, whether as creators or audiences. We all feel a draw, a pull, a gravity that pulls us to paint, music, dance, story, theatre and more. Why? Who knows. Who cares! It feels good, or perhaps more accurately, we feel. Period.

So yes. Art is pointless, and thank god it is.
