Labour Day Weekend Ferry Update 🌊

As Labour Day Weekend approaches, we’re sharing a few updates to help you plan your visit to Saysutshun:

⛴️ Ferries will run from 9:00 AM–8:00 PM.
Additional sailings will be added at quarter past and quarter to each hour, depending on demand.

⛴️ Two ferries are now running! We’re back at full capacity with our ferry service, helping make your trip to Saysutshun easier.

🚨 High Wind Warning - September 2

High winds may affect the ferry service to and from Saysutshun. For everyone’s safety, the ferry service may be suspended if sustained winds from the south reach 30 km/h or higher.

If you’re planning to visit, please check for updates before heading down to the ferry terminal.

Meet the majestic Great Blue Heron

The shores, wetlands, and forests of Saysutshun provide the perfect home for these striking birds, where they can often be spotted patiently wading along the shoreline in search of their next meal.

With fast reflexes and sharp eyesight, Great Blue Herons hunt fish, amphibians, and other small beings in the island's coastal waters.

In British Columbia, Great Blue Herons are a Blue-Listed Species, meaning they are considered vulnerable and are protected, along with their nests and nest trees. By respecting the tuĺtuluẃ (wildlife) communities and giving these incredible birds plenty of space, we can help keep them safe.

Here, nature leads, and amenities are limited. Basic facilities are available, but services are intentionally minimal to preserve the island.

Our 1930s Pavilion, shown here, is available for rent. Rental includes lighting, kitchen, washrooms, table and chairs, and on-site support.

Did you know? Pulp-stone Quarries:

While waiting for your ferry ride to Nanaimo, explore this area where pulpstones were shaped, cut, and polished to be used as grinders in pulp and paper factories.

A highly specialized cutting machine, operating from a steam-powered engine, shaped cylinders of sandstone in a very noisy process that took about 45 minutes per cylinder. The standing cylinder was cut or broken loose by detonating a small explosive charge in a horizontally drilled hole at its base. The cylinder was then moved to a lathe that trimmed and polished the stone.

The initial cut cylinders were about a metre tall and 1.4 metres in diameter. They were reduced by trimming and polishing to half their height and about a metre in diameter. The only finished pulp-stone on display came from nearby Gabriola Island and therefore has different dimensions. By 1932, pulp-stone work had ceased here and moved to Gabriola Island for another decade.

🌊Upcoming Ferry Schedule

Starting Monday, August 17:
Each ferry will depart every half hour on the hour from 9:00 AM–8PM. The last sailing to Saysutshun is at 7:30 PM, and the last sailing off Saysutshun is at 7:45 PM.

Starting Labour Day Weekend:
Ferries will run from 10:00 AM–6:00 PM.

*Extra sailings will be added at quarter after and quarter to every hour depending on demand.

Until further notice, the Saysutshun Ferry Service will be operating with one 12-passenger ferry while mechanical work is underway.

We recognize this may mean reduced capacity and longer wait times, and we appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through this temporary change.
