Norval Morrisseau: Shaman and Apprentice, ca. 1980–85, acrylic on canvas

Norval Morrisseau (1931–2007), a famous Anishinaabe artist from Ontario known as the “Picasso of the North,” is widely regarded as the grandfather of contemporary Indigenous art in Canada and the founder of the Woodland School of Art. Recognized for his bold black outlines and vibrant colours, Morrisseau drew deeply from his spirituality and experiences as a survivor of the Canadian residential school system to create his powerful works.

In Shaman and Apprentice, human, animal, and spiritual forms appear interconnected, reflecting a world where the boundaries between the physical and spiritual are not always separate.

Morrisseau did more than create visually striking paintings. He challenged the art world to reconsider whose stories, traditions, and ways of seeing are given value and recognition.

His work raises an important question:

When we decide what art is worth, are we also deciding whose worldview is worth listening to?

Bloody Grin 🎭

I’ve always been drawn to the Joker, especially the haunting portrayal by Joaquin Phoenix in Joker.
There’s something deeply unsettling yet painfully human in his character, a smile hiding chaos, humor masking pain.

This piece explores the quiet darkness many of us carry
the forced smiles, the hidden cracks,
the emotions we don’t always let the world see.

Sometimes the darkest feelings don’t scream.
They grin.

What do you see behind this smile?
