Illusuak Cultural Centre / Illusuak IlikKusiligijingita SuliaKapvinga A safe, welcoming space to protect, promote & steer Labrador Inuit culture for Inuit & the world Illusuak will become a hub of cultural activity in Nunatsiavut.

A SAFE AND WELCOMING SPACE TO PROTECT, PROMOTE AND STEER LABRADOR INUIT CULTURE FOR INUIT, AND THE WORLD THAT FOLLOWS

The Illusuak Cultural Centre will be built in Nain, and will house permanent exhibits, an audio-visual/performing arts theatre, a café, a gift shop, and several offices. Illusuak will be dedicated to showcasing Labrador Inuit life, past and present, to build local knowledge and st

imulate pride in our unique culture. To ensure that all Labrador Inuit can benefit from the Centre, travelling exhibits, programming activities, and cultural events will travel to all coastal communities and to other locations in Canada. It will be YOUR Centre, a place for all Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claim Agreement, and everyone is invited to get involved and become part of the story.

The Illusuak Cultural Centre in Nain is anticipated to reopen to the public this June, barring any unforeseen circumstances. Tuttuk/Caribou mural- Jason Jacque from Postville sketched this beautiful piece in 2017. Currently there is a caribou moratorium on-going since 2013 and this piece is very fitting because caribou was the staple food for Inuit. Caribou was a big part of our culture, and it brought Inuit together by hunting the animal, sharing the meat with-in our communities' and extracting parts of the caribou for other purposes i.e. cleaning the hide for clothing/warmth and making sinew for sewing.
