In 2022, Len Cuthbert mailed a letter to Ken Howe, son of Thompson Howe, on whose farm the American Airlines DC-3 Flagship Erie crashed on October 30, 1941. Len was considering writing a play about the tragedy and hoped he might be willing to share some information.

Within days, Ken called. The very next day, Len received a call from a member of the Southwold History Committee. Those two conversations set in motion a journey that led to the premiere production of "Lawrence Station: The Crash of American Airlines Flagship Erie" in April 2023. Performed at the Keystone Complex in Shedden, the production played to sold-out audiences totaling more than 600 people.

Now, with the support of the Township of Southwold, the Southwold History Committee, Green Lane Community Trust, and Elgin County, we are bringing the story back to the Keystone Complex in an updated production featuring original music — 85 years to the day after the tragic event.

When American Airlines Flight 1 crashed on Thompson and Viola Howe’s farm on October 30, 1941, the residents of Lawrence Station, Ontario and the surrounding community rushed to rescue the 17 passengers and 3 crew members aboard. At the time, it was Canada's worst aviation disaster. This music-infused play explores the lives forever changed by the tragic final flight of the Flagship Erie.

Red Comet is a heartfelt coming-of-age comedy-drama about friendship, growing up, and the difficult choices that come with change.

Over the course of their final year of high school, two best friends, one driven by logic, the other by emotion, struggle with unspoken feelings, shifting dreams, and the reality that life may pull them in different directions.

Thoughtful, funny, and emotionally honest, Red Comet speaks to both young audiences and adults alike.

Written by Len Cuthbert, creator of Fridge Door Live Theatre Company and published playwright whose work has been produced in North America and Europe.
