Religious iconography has long been a motif in gothic aesthetics because of the strong emotional weight these symbols carry. Even detached from faith itself, they still evoke ideas of devotion, beauty, suffering, mortality…

It can also be a way of reclaiming or interrogating religion, as many gothic subcultures sprout from feelings of alienation, repression, and grief.

In that sense, gothic aesthetics often use religion more as a form of visual poetry than doctrine.
