À l'origine de THE LOBSTER se trouve le constat que notre société favorise énormément le binôme du couple au détriment des personnes célibataires, qui elles, subissent la pression constante de trouver partenaire. Premier film de langue anglaise pour Yorgos Lanthimos et co-écrit avec son complice Efthimis Filippou, THE LOBSTER pousse ce constat à l'extrême et imagine un monde où les personnes célibataires ont 45 jours pour trouver une douce moitié avec qui elles ont un point commun, faute de quoi elles seront transformées en un animal de leur choix. Le résultat est une comédie noire absurde et grinçante où le malaise plane, mais surtout, l'oeuvre qui a révélé Lanthimos au grand public, au-delà de sa Grèce natale.

At the heart of THE LOBSTER lies the observation that our society strongly favors romantic couples at the expense of single people, who face constant pressure to find a partner. The first English-language film by Yorgos Lanthimos, co-written with his longtime collaborator Efthimis Filippou, THE LOBSTER takes this idea to its extreme, imagining a world where single people are given 45 days to find a soulmate with whom they share a common trait, or else be transformed into an animal of their choosing. The result is a dark, absurd, and biting comedy filled with an unsettling atmosphere—and, above all, the film that introduced Lanthimos to a wider international audience beyond his native Greece.
