for the last years Penelope has sat on my desktop reminding me every day not only to remain focused and loyal to whatever, whomever, I so choose, but that her story matters as much as the famous men’s. I haven’t seen Nolan’s Greek poem yet, but I already know whose story I want to see most alongside the epic shots of waves. 🌊🌊🌊🌊

been trying to capture these last weeks these brothers going from boys to men, their developing personalities, passions, some that have long been set in stone. as a mum trying to prepare them for manhood i realise i only really want to ensure that they will remain the best of friends and that i never ever hear from a woman that they didn’t treat her like a gentleman.

there are crazy stats about how mums photograph dads and their kids a lot but the reverse is much less so. and photos of dads and their kids are oohed and ahhed “he’s such a great dad” much more than photos of mums and their kids. photograph mums.

every mum knows their kid’s birthday is their birth day too and you have to take a moment alone to remember and celebrate somehow. for an artist it’s often the memory of when the focus shifted from 100% artistic creation to caring for one’s biological creation while trying to keep one’s inner creative spirit running. walking up a hill is akin to the challenge. sweat. determination. pain. society rarely if ever recognizes women’s labours, artist or other, we have to do it for ourselves.
