an overdue update:
(farewell to 305 Bellechasse)
Say hello to...
Les Ateliers Casgrain
After two years of looming uncertainty that only got worse as the months dragged on, a small group of artists, of which I am a part, (mostly from the 305 Bellechasse (Catelli) Building, here in Montreal) have embarked on a project of transition that will land us in a brand-new studio space in Montreal’s Mile End this fall.
The new arrangement promises to solve the problem of instability that we artists have had to put up with recently, and more hopefully will help bring the momentum back in favour of the artistic community in general. Indeed, in collaboration with Ateliers créatifs Montréal, who have been sitting at the table with building owners and municipal authorities alike, we look forward to hammering out an approach that is both pro-business and protective of cultural producers, opening up studio spaces in a key neighbourhood at risk of losing its artistic heartbeat.
If successful, it could well be the first step towards a much broader, more inclusive approach that would benefit many more artists and artisans in the months and years to come – the very people who have been credited with reviving neighbourhoods time and time again.
The future is bright: we have allies; we have some support. But this project is by no means a slam-dunk. As a group, we are faced with the challenge of meeting at least half of our immediate costs of renovations, which are considerable, before we can finally get back to work doing what we do.
Which brings me to the question: will you help by making a donation to our cause? Any amount, small or large, helps enormously.
