We’re excited to present One Thing for Another, Saul Sanchez’s first solo exhibition at the gallery. The series features large‑scale oil paintings inspired by 19th‑century assiettes parlantes—decorative French and English plates that combined images and words to form playful rebus puzzles. Once moving from aristocratic cabinets to everyday tables, these plates carried humor, codes, and hidden messages revealed only when turned in the hand.
By enlarging them, Sanchez blurs their purpose: plate, image, or riddle? The works explore how meaning shifts as it travels across languages, materials, and systems of communication.
The exhibition also includes a wall piece in Gregg shorthand, a nearly forgotten stenographic script. The encoded sentence—“This picture is a fine addition to our collection”—appears and disappears at once, echoing questions of value, access, and legibility.

Nous sommes très heureux d’accueillir Alexis Riverin et Renée Mathews comme artistes en résidence. Leurs pratiques se rejoignent par une attention fine à la matérialité, au geste et aux récits personnels. Merci à Desjardins pour son soutien à cette résidence et à la relève en art contemporain.

Alexis Riverin est un artiste interdisciplinaire basé à Montréal. Sa pratique en peinture, textile et sculpture explore l’espace, le deuil, l’identité et le genre à travers des gestes lents et réfléchis.

Renée Mathews est une artiste barbadienne‑canadienne travaillant la sculpture, le collage et l’installation. Reconnue pour ses perruques en denim, elle explore l’identité, la durabilité et le corps par des processus tactiles et intuitifs.

Alexis Riverin is a Montréal‑based interdisciplinary artist working across painting, textiles, and sculpture. His work explores spatiality, grief, identity, and gender, transforming domestic materials through slow, meditative gestures.

Renée Mathews is a Barbadian‑Canadian artist whose practice spans sculpture, collage, and material‑driven installations. Known for her innovative denim wigs, she explores identity, sustainability, and the body through tactile, intuitive processes.
