Why is this normal?
Music seems to be the only form of art where it is ok to exploit people or steal their work. Add to this, the way streaming platforms make money off of artists, leaving them with fractions of the revenue. And if this isn’t enough, tech giants are now trying to replace artists with AI, but AI creates nothing, it uses what has been done to create new music with bits and pieces of original work.
Welcome to this new era of mediocrity.

James Blake has claimed that he isn’t paid for 95% of the work that he produces in a new interview with Rolling Stone.

Speaking to the publication just ahead of the release of his seventh studio album ‘Trying Times’, which landed on Friday (March 13) Blake said out of the “10,000 hours” he spends mastering music, “I probably spent that just doing things that never came out”.

He said that he puts it down to “the way the industry is”, explaining: “As a producer, you’re just throwing paint, you’re throwing stuff at a wall and seeing what sticks.”

When asked about the amount of time he works on music, he claimed: “I’d say 99, not 99 – 95% of the work I’ve done was unpaid,” which he said is “nuts”.

“It’s not even a complaint,” he said. “Producers don’t get paid by the hour. You can spend a lot of hours on a piece of music, and then the direction of a record can change. And that can happen with me too. I can just wake up one day and just realise, ‘Oh s**t, we’ve been going in the wrong direction.’ And then five to 10 songs just disappear.”

If this is true, some of us are going to live long.

If this is true, some of us are going to live long.

A recent study from the National Institutes of Health suggests that regularly listening to house music, especially in the 120–130 BPM range, may be linked to slower biological aging, with some findings pointing to differences equivalent to up to six years.

Researchers reviewed brain imaging and genetic data from more than 35,000 participants and observed several patterns. House music listening was associated with lower cortisol levels, a hormone tied to stress and accelerated aging. Participants also showed improved heart rate variability (HRV), a key indicator of cardiovascular health and longevity, along with increased brain activity connected to cognitive function. The consistent, rhythmic structure of house music may support neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to adapt and form new neural connections over time.

The broader takeaway: music has measurable effects on the body and mind, and certain rhythmic patterns may play a role in long-term wellbeing.

In what is being described as “hard techno’s “ moment”, multiple DJs have been removed from festival and club line-ups following allegations of sexual misconduct and abuse.

Accusations against DJs including Shlømo, Odymel, CARV, Basswell and Fantasm have come to light following a series of posts from — including reports of r**e, sexual harassment, coercion, and more.

Shlømo, Odymel, CARV and Fantasm have since issued statements in response to the allegations. Basswell has not yet responded publicly.

Numerous festivals and promoters have now removed the artists from their line-ups, including HIVE Festival, Pitch Music & Arts, Face2Face, XXL, Digi Festival, Verknipt, REBELS Mexico, Neolitika, Sea You Festival and GLITCH Festival.

Since then, scores of artists within the hard techno scene have issued statements in support of the alleged victims of sexual assault, including sim0ne, VTSS, Sara Landry, Hannah Laing, Chippy Nonstop, blk., Joyhauser, Cera Khin, Ashtrl, and SPFDJ.

Amelie Lens shared a lengthy statement yesterday (February 25), highlighting the misogyny she has faced as a high-profile female DJ, writing: “I once went to the police with hundreds of messages from a person detailing exactly how he would kidnap and r*pe me.”

“I am not ready to share my personal experiences and I shouldn't have to. I shouldn't have to relive my trauma just so you'll finally tell your 'bro' to stop. Just make them stop.

“Help us break the cycle, stop automatically protecting your bros and ask yourself, why are there accusations in the first place? The truth isn't defamation, it is a reckoning.“
