Join Teesri Duniya for the second of four Long Table Dialogues on Islamophobia, antisemitism, and racialized hate. Following our last dialogue session in March, this instalment will create space to share how our experiences of racialized hate are changing within this rapidly evolving political landscape. The ground is shifting beneath us - how are we responding?

The Long Table is a participatory format that invites people to gather around a shared table, where speaking and listening are treated as equal acts. Participants may step forward to join the conversation or remain in quiet observation, allowing the discussion to unfold with care and intention.

At a time of deep polarization, this gathering creates space for difficult conversations without debate or spectacle. Rooted in mutual respect, the Long Table invites participants to speak from lived experience, listen across differences, and resist dehumanization at a local scale.

THE LABOUR OF LOVE: A Review of Wine & Halva at Teesri Duniya Theatre

By Arismita Ghosh

“Make yourself as comfortable as you can,” the narrator warns, “because we will make sure that you’re very uncomfortable very soon.” In their review of Deniz Başar’s Wine & Halva, Arismita Ghosh explores a biting, anti-realist comedy that trades escapism for intellectual friction. From its Brechtian inspiration to the blank slate performances of its trio of actors, the play is a masterclass in metatheatre that refuses to dumb itself down. It is a demanding, hopeful, and deeply analytical look at the labour of friendship in an unequal world, and a testament to the labour of love required to bring such challenging work to the stage.

"Wine & Halva' is not the usual kind of play that you get to see at Montreal’s well-established theatre institutions. Currently being performed at Teesri Duniya Theatre’s Rangshala studio, it sits at the intersection of east and west, and the unspoken cost of fitting in. The title says it all: 'Wine & Halva' likely don’t go together, and that's precisely the point. But if one is adventurous enough, then the possibilities are endless." - Ankush Lamba

"Stories like this challenge audiences to confront the limitations of their own perspectives and understand better what it means to truly integrate into a society without losing one’s authentic self in the process. But the play is also honest about its own limits. Not everyone in that room is there to be challenged. One line captures this perfectly...'"

Our friend Ehab Lotayef, along with other participants, has been detained on the Sumud Flotilla. We strongly denounce Israel’s actions. Under mounting pressure, the Israeli government released the captives. But they did not do so without creating more images of human rights abuses, which are now circulating worldwide.

We are asking the Canadian Government to take immediate and strong action. We also urge Canadians to contact their Members of Parliament and demand accountability and protection for those involved.
