đź–¤ The black box: millions in mechanical royalties nobody claimed.
Here's something most independent artists don't know: every stream generates TWO royalties — one for the recording (the master), one for the song itself (the mechanical/publishing side).
And here's where it breaks: if the ownership data doesn't match — a wrong ISRC, a misspelled songwriter name, a song that was never registered anywhere — that second royalty has nowhere to go. It lands in what the industry calls the "black box": unmatched mechanical royalties, held by organizations like the MLC in the US and the CMRRA in Canada, waiting for someone to claim them.
Year after year, unclaimed mechanicals pile up. Money that was earned and processed — but never reached an artist.
What you can control: register every song, double-check your metadata, and audit what your distributor actually pays you. Upload your distributor statement to SongStrat and see every royalty line calculated to the cent — that's how you catch what's missing. Link in bio. 🎵
