Everyday is a good day to celebrate the music and legacy of Geri Allen. This gives a great intro to her expansive discography and there is room in the comments to add other pieces not listed here 💜

I was happy to add a submission on “First Black Man… M.O.P.E.”… there were so many great pieces to choose from. I was first introduced to her music by my teacher Clyde Kerr Jr in high school and it blew my mind. Got to meet her through my friend Kassa Overall and then more officially got to know her through Farah Jasmine Griffin at Columbia and as my church member at Bethany Baptist Church of Newark through Rev Dr William Howard. She was on my dissertation committee and I’ll never forget the advice she gave me as I embarked on a career in academia. I love when my students learn to play her music. And there are generations that continue to be inspired by her music and legacy.

We love you, Geri. 🌹

Courtney Bryan discusses translating Williams’s Southern Gothic world into music, while director and co-librettist Daniel Fish, co-librettist Gideon Lester, and soprano Mikaela Bennett reflect on bringing this powerful new work to the stage. The opera premieres June 25 and runs through July 19 at the Fisher Center at Bard.

Hear the World Premiere of Courtney Bryan’s Ancestor Tree commissioned for the 30th New Orleans International Piano Competition with support from the Edgar “Dooky”Jr. and Leah Chase Family Foundation in loving memory of Edgar “Dooky” Chase III.

Written in honor of the tree in Congo Square while loosely influenced by Gottschalk’s Bamboula, Ancestor Tree will be performed by all 12 Semifinalists in Rounds I and II.
