FERDINAND BATANTOU DIA N'KABA

Notre frère, ami et mentor, Tonton Batantou nous a quitté-e-s soudainement.
Une figure incontournable du Ballet national du Congo, il a été pour nous le maître-tambour qui rayonna au coeur de nos initiatives et entreprises artistiques et culturelles, pendant plus de trois décennies, accompagnant et appuyant nos efforts pour, à la fois, transmettre et rendre au tambour sa place, dans la mouvance qui nous caractérise en tant que communauté héritière d'un savoir et d'esthétiques qui n'ont cessé de se renouveler au-delà des frontières qui les ont vu naître.
Il fut de ceux et celles qui propulsèrent tout en en solidifiant les bases, cet art du tambour et des rythmes, d'origine Kongo et qui, sous sa formidable impulsion et sa constance, s'est révélé plus que jamais fondateur et rassembleur de communautés comme la nôtre — et d’autres dans le monde, autour de la musique et de la danse.
On en retrouvera la mémoire vivante dans sa discographie et dans les nombreuses collaborations à l’occasion desquelles il s’est joint à des artistes de divers horizons.
Tonton Batantou, nous le savons, laisse derrière lui, partout où il est passé, une pléthore d'émules, auxquel-le-s il a su enseigner les multiples finesses et nuances d'un jeu tambouriné qui, pour longtemps résonnera dans les coeurs, élevant notre esprit et nos espérances.
Un véritable bout-en-train, il était apprécié de tous et toutes ceux et celles qui croisaient son chemin.
Il nous manquera toujours. MATONDO TÂ BATANTOU !

[Biographie]
Maître batteur d’origine congolaise, Ferdinand Batantou a été percussionniste du Ballet National du Congo. Il a, depuis, participé à plusieurs festivals partout dans le monde. En France, il est un accompagnateur émérite des cours de danse africaine. Professeur invité à l’Université du Michigan, il participe, depuis 1995 au Congolese Camp en Californie et à Hawaï, aux États-Unis. Ses talents d’arrangeur lui ont valu d’avoir contribué à la réalisation de plusieurs projets d’envergure dont un avec Doudou N’Diaye Rose, tambourinaire de réputation internationale du Sénégal.

Our brother, friend, and mentor, Tonton Batantou, has left us suddenly.
An iconic figure of the National Ballet of Congo, he was the master drummer who stood at the heart of our artistic and cultural initiatives for more than three decades, accompanying and supporting our efforts to both pass on and restore the drum to its rightful place within the movement that defines us as a community inheriting traditions of knowledge and aesthetics that have continued to evolve far beyond the borders where they were born.
He was among those who advanced this art of drumming and of Kongo-derived rhythms while strengthening its foundations. Through his remarkable drive and unwavering dedication, this tradition revealed itself more than ever as a source of identity and unity, bringing together communities such as ours—and many others around the world—through music and dance.
His living legacy can be found in his recordings and in the many collaborations he created with artists from diverse backgrounds.
Tonton Batantou, as we know, leaves behind, wherever he went, countless students and followers to whom he taught the many subtleties and nuances of drumming. For years to come, those rhythms will continue to resonate in our hearts, uplifting our spirits and sustaining our hopes.
A true bon vivant, he was cherished by all who had the privilege of crossing his path.
He will always be deeply missed. MATONDO TÂ BATANTOU !

[Biography]
Master drummer of Congolese origin, Ferdinand Batantou was a percussionist for the National Ballet of Congo. He has since participated in several festivals around the world. In France, he is a distinguished accompanist of African dance classes. A visiting professor at the University of Michigan, he has participated since 1995 in the Congolese Camp in California and Hawaii, in the United States. His talents as an arranger have enabled him to contribute to the realization of several major projects, including one with Doudou N’Diaye Rose, an internationally renowned drummer from Senegal.
