I decided to apply all my new skills and knowledge to try to improve this piece and I was super happy to see the progress I’ve made! 2023 was a big learning year for me. I wasn’t happy with my art at all and felt I was lacking in some aspects but I couldn’t understand what. I would tell myself that since I went to art school, I already knew everything I needed to know, so naturally, I should be capable to make any drawing I want right? I would start a piece, I would try to render it and then give up in frustration. I didn’t understand why and it hurt my ego to see I couldn’t properly execute my ideas the way I wanted. My eyes knew what I wanted to see but my hand just wasn’t doing it “right”. I decided to go back to the basics and let go of the ego. I started studying the shapes and proportions again, colour theory a design principles, I started doing studies and analyze other artists drawing. I started watching tutorials and critics on YouTube and try to properly soak everything in and actually understand what I was hearing. I had already learned these skills in school but for some reason they didn’t really make sense in my head, the words didn’t “mean” anything and I just couldn’t apply what I was learning. Re learning everything I thought I knew, doing studies and going back to gesture drawing really helped and I can see how my art has evolved faster than ever. I still have a HUUUGE way to go, but I’ll sit with this progress and enjoy the ride 😎🐈🌸
