Let me start with a thank you, because none of this happens without everybody. We all have a part to play in showing up for one another, and every year the Block Party is a reminder of what that looks like.
It’s been a little over a week since this year’s celebration, and I intentionally took some time before writing this. Some things deserve to be felt before they’re put into words. Things that are truly worth building take time and remind us that life’s most meaningful moments still happen when we come together in real life.
One thing I always hear is that Montréal don’t support each other. Maybe that’s some people’s experience, but it’s never been ours. We’ve never focused on who’s missing. We’ve always focused on the people who show up.
Being able to celebrate year five is a testament to the work, the sacrifices, and the consistency of everyone involved. That’s how culture is built. It’s about creating something people can count on, year after year, until it becomes part of who we are as a community.
One of the most beautiful things about the Block Party is seeing every generation come together. The elders show up, the youth show up, and everyone brings their own energy to one place. Most importantly, seeing young people take ownership and be there for each other gives me a lot of hope.
Music, food, sports, art, wellness, dance and culture all have the power to bring folks together. But none of it happens without the people behind it. You’re the reason it all comes to life.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you to the Home Team, our vendors, our volunteers, our coaches, and to our hometown hero Bennedict Mathurin for showing up and showing love to the kids. Your presence matters more than you know.
