Deepest gratitude to RAW members, apprentices and volunteers who put on last week’s TCLC and TTF! It was such a joy to connect with, dive into deep discussions on complex topics and hear a little about everyone’s taiko journeys and projects during TCLC. Many thanks to PJ & Roy Hirabayashi for sharing and starting us off on some of the heavier discussions and to Mila Mendez, Lactation Consultant for facilitating and navigating us through TCLC with such grace and ease.

It was a real pleasure to drum together at TTF during workshops and the Bang On concert! So rare to see so much Canadian taiko on one stage! Thank you Young Park for bringing us together in performance! Thank you everyone for sharing your energy! Shout out to Wy Joung Kou 高慧中 for composing such a fun piece for us to all play together.

Thank you also to all who took part in our Intro Odaiko and intermediate Miyake workshops! We hope you came away with something useful and not just sore arms and legs ;)

Leaving with hearts full, high spirits, and many new ideas to work on. Lots to digest and savour from the week and weekend. Thank you! ❤️

One of our first times in Vancouver and we were able to bring some good weather with us for most of the trip! Taking a small bike trip around North Vancouver and Stanley park, we were able to see why people love to live here.

We also got a chance to connect with some of the local taiko community both through the Miyake Intensive and also through some visits and meals. This includes making a connection to Katari Taiko and one of the founding members Naomi Shikaze who first bright Taiko to Montreal in the early 80s. It was a meaningful and heartfelt connection, as we would not be where we are today without that connection over 4 decades ago. Okagesama de!

Thank you also to for having us at your practice! We loved seeing you when you visited Montreal and were further impressed by the dedication and energy that your team practices with! Ganbatte on your future performances and we hope to keep connected with you!

Returning from Vancouver, our hearts and minds are full, bodies aching! Thank you to Noriko, Shozo and for organizing the Canada Miyake Intensive. Thank you also to our teachers and Haruyoshi for making the trip and sharing your invaluable insight and experience guiding us to a stronger and more powerful Miyake taiko. Over the weekend, we were able to meet many wonderful people who share this passion, sweating together, learning, and of course, sharing a few drinks. We hope to keep all these connections alive, deepening our practice, and reconnecting again in the future somewhere in the world, hitting together again. Wasshoi!

Nous avons eu le grand honneur de rejoindre Toby pour son récital de fin d'études, interprétant une pièce magnifique pour saxophone 🎷et taiko composée par Dai Fujikura. Merci de nous avoir invités à collaborer avec toi et de nous avoir confié un rôle si important.

Partager la scène avec toi a été un véritable bonheur : stimulant, inspirant et un formidable défi qui nous a permis de repousser les limites de notre répertoire habituel de la plus belle des manières. Nous sommes reconnaissants de cette expérience et ravis d'avoir pu participer à un moment aussi exceptionnel.

Sharing the stage with you was a real joy—energizing, inspiring, and a wonderful challenge that pushed us beyond our usual repertoire in the best possible way. We’re grateful for the experience and thrilled we could be part of such a special moment.

Le festival se déroulera du 7 au 9 août au Randolph College for the Performing Arts (736, rue Bathurst).

This year’s festival theme is FINDING OUR SOUND: People who play taiko have different histories, experiences, identities, and commitments. Yet, the resonance of the drums builds bridges for connection. Finding Our Sound is about the music we can make when we honour our own stories and let those of others inspire us to turn towards each other. This year’s festival amplifies taiko as not only a way to drum, but also a way to listen, share, and build more resilient and interconnected communities.

Featuring public workshops, a vibrant festival concert, film screenings and more, TTF is an intimate gathering with curated programs that share the joy and power of taiko for community building and self-empowerment at all levels of experience.

As 2025 nears its close, we wanted to express our deepest gratitude and appreciation for all of the people that have helped to make the opportunities and collaborations that we have had this year possible. We are truly grateful for the support and encouragement that we’ve received as we continue on our taiko and dance journeys from friends, family, taiko artists, mentors and teachers as well as taiko appreciators. Thank you for being there and for continuing to support and encourage us. It motivates us to keep going and growing. We look forward to seeing you again in 2026. :) 💕

The natural beauty of Sado
As the wintery-cold -15C weather continues here in Montreal, our minds are drifting back to the +40C days in Japan from this summer and to Sado. This beautiful island in the sea of Japan, off the north-eastern coast of Japan, is located about a 7-hour transit from Tokyo. We had the pleasure to experience first-hand some of the many wonders the island has to offer as we drove from the southern tip to the northern tip and back. Definitely better experienced in person as the pictures don’t do it justice, but we thought we’d share some of it all the same. 🥰

Notable highlights included:

The natural linked islands of Yajima and Kyoujima in crystalline ocean waters

Driving along the narrow roads hugging the rocky cliffs, overlooking the Japan ocean

Climbing down and bathing near Futatsugame

Climbing all the way up and getting a panoramic view at the northern tip on Onogame

Driving up beyond the clouds overlooking the middle valley on the Sado Skyline

Walking between the buildings of the preserved fishing village of Shukunegi

Cycling past the endless lush green rice fields that grow the delicious Sado rice

There is a genuine peacefulness as you let your senses delight in and absorb the natural beauty of this island. It is no wonder that Kodo members are inspired and nurtured by the mountains, forests, and ocean and all that is present on this small, yet bountiful island. We highly recommend visiting if ever you have the opportunity!

Farnham Nikkei Memorial
Earlier this month, a monument was unveiled in Farnham, QC, to pay tribute to the Japanese Canadians that came through Farnham after the Second World War. This project saw the light of day thanks to the tireless efforts of and the committee at the -qc and many others who made this event possible.

We had the honour of playing our piece, Shizue no Michi, a piece we wrote inspired by Mark Sakamoto’s book, Shizue’s path, to pay tribute to the resilience of Japanese Canadians, particularly those relocated, displaced and affected by internment and their descendants. We had the pleasure to play alongside Hisako, Sandra, Julie, Sara, Jason and Sean for this event. Thank you for inviting us to be a part of this historic day.
