"Boys will be boys."
An impressive phrase, really.
It's often used to excuse aggression, cruelty, violence, recklessness, harassment, and behavior that would be unacceptable if we called it what it was.
When men commit violence, we're often invited to find the reason. But let a woman become dangerous and suddenly we're all very interested in accountability.
This painting isn't about celebrating a serial k1ller. It's a question. Why are some acts treated as human nature, while others become proof that someone was a monster? Because if boys will be boys, then girls, it seems, are expected to be saints.
And everyone gets uncomfortable when they aren't.
