📸 Et si l’entrepreneuriat était aussi un acte de résistance ?

À l’occasion de la Journée internationale des droits des femmes, nous avons tenu, en partenariat avec .au.feminin , l'atelier-conversation « She Means Business : l’entrepreneuriat féminin comme acte de résistance », en finissage de l’exposition « Triomphe: The Story of Gloria Clarke Baylis ».

L’histoire de Gloria Clarke Baylis en est un exemple puissant. En 1983, après une victoire historique contre la chaîne Hilton dans une cause de discrimination raciale à l’emploi, elle fonde Baylis Medical Company dans son salon. L’entreprise deviendra un acteur pionnier des technologies médicales, dont une partie a été vendue en 2022 pour 1,75 milliard $ US.

En conversation avec , PDG d' .au.feminin , Tiffany Callender PDG de la , a rappelé que des initiatives entrepreneuriales qui semblent modestes au départ peuvent devenir de puissants leviers d’émancipation économique et d’affirmation, particulièrement au sein des communautés noires.

And what if entrepreneurship were also an act of resistance?

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, we held, in partnership with Audace au Féminin, the workshop-conversation “She Means Business: Women’s Entrepreneurship as an Act of Resistance,” as part of the closing event of the exhibition “Triomphe: The Story of Gloria Clarke Baylis.”

The story of Gloria Clarke Baylis is a powerful example. In 1983, following a historic victory against the Hilton chain in a racial employment discrimination case, she founded Baylis Medical Company in her living room. The company would go on to become a pioneering player in medical technologies, with a portion of it sold in 2022 for $1.75 billion USD.

In conversation with , CEO of .au.feminin, Tiffany Callender, CEO of the , reminded us that entrepreneurial initiatives that may seem modest at the beginning can become powerful levers for economic empowerment and affirmation, particularly within Black communities.

Here, Françoise Baylis, Gloria Baylis’s eldest daughter, shares a story her mother once entrusted to her. At just 16 years old, Gloria Baylis secured a teaching position to mentor young students. When her employer refused to pay her, she chose to take him to court — a bold decision that revealed her early determination to stand up against injustice and confront discrimination.

Through this testimony, Gloria Baylis’s strength of character comes into focus: courage, perseverance, and a deep commitment to turning obstacles into catalysts for action.
