Jummah Reflections: Closing the Year with Gratitude and Grace

As this year comes to a close, we raise our hands in prayer for the world —
May 2026 bring success to every heart, ease to every struggle, clarity to every mind and blessings to every home.

May we walk with gratitude, rise with strength and grow with faith.
Ya Allah, grant us victories in our work, peace in our souls and barakah in every step we take.
Ameen.

The History of Tezhip: Where Gold Meets Devotion

Tezhip—the art of gilding—began as a sacred way to honor the Qur’an with gold, color and intricate motifs. Over the centuries, it flourished in the Ottoman courts, where master artists refined its patterns, harmony and elegance into the form we admire today.

Even now, Tezhip continues to shine as artists preserve its traditional beauty while bringing new interpretations to life. A timeless craft where devotion, patience and gold come together in perfect balance.

Every calligrapher knows this moment—the clean sheet, the poised qalam, the quiet hesitation before the first stroke. The blank page can feel intimidating, not because we lack skill, but because we care so deeply about what we’re about to create.

In Arabic Calligraphy, the first dot (nuqta) is more than a mark—it’s an act of courage. A reminder that every masterpiece begins with a single, intentional moment. No artist escapes the nerves, but we grow by moving through them.

This December, embrace the beauty of beginnings. Allow yourself to start slowly, breathe deeply and trust your hand. Each dot, each line, each curve is a step forward—proof that progress is made one stroke at a time.

In our latest Script Spotlight, we immerse ourselves in the regal and timeless world of Thuluth.

Thuluth (meaning “one-third”), commonly known as “mother of scripts”, is renowned for its breathtaking elegance and structural grandeur. The script has elegant curved lines which feature detailed loops and interweaving letters - designing complex compositions. Thuluth has some of the distinctive features of Kufic script - initially it was used to write religious inscriptions, Surrah headings and Arabic writings in mosques.

Harakat (also known as A’arab) is an important aspect of the script. It represents certain stylistic marks and vowel sounds which enhance the script. These marks have their rules regarding the placement and grouping - giving creative liberty in terms of the orientation and shape to Thuluth style.

Look for its defining features: towering uprights, sweeping baseline curves and an intricate, interlacing beauty that commands respect. For those who appreciate the depth of traditional scripts, Thuluth serves as a reminder of how history, discipline and artistry come together to shape the foundations of Islamic Calligraphy.

This December, we reflect on one of the most cherished traditions in Islamic art — the Hilye-i Şerif.

More than a written description, the Hilye-i Şerif represents a profound blend of Calligraphy, devotion and aesthetics. For centuries, it has adorned homes and sacred spaces, serving as a visual reminder of reverence, beauty and spiritual connection to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Rooted in Ottoman artistry, each Hilye carries its own harmony of script, layout and illumination, making it both a masterpiece of faith and a testament to the discipline of traditional Calligraphy.

As we honor this timeless art form, we celebrate the way the Hilye-i Şerif continues to inspire artists, preserve tradition and reflect the enduring elegance of classical Islamic design.
