Iona’s dance program focuses on developing the technique,
creativity and artistry of each student. The dance curriculum is
developed around Classical Ballet (R.A.D) and Modern/
Contemporary Dance. The program is also complemented by the
study of Jazz Dance, World Dance and Urban Dance. The first
semester’s focus is on building technique and finding the students
personal voice through creatio
n and composition. Second semester
will continue to build on the technique and skill established in
semester one, along with accentuating performance and
presentation. Theory is embedded through out both semesters and
includes the study of anatomy, injury care and prevention,
nutrition, history, analysis and critique. Also, essential skills such
as leadership, discipline, creativity and cooperation are emphasized
so that each student’s unique God given gifts can be neutered and
developed. This 4-year program is designed to help students acquire the
necessary skills to peruse a successful transition to life after high
school. Whether it is post-secondary education in dance, dance as
a profession, teaching/choreography or any of the many careers
related to dance, students will build the necessary skills to feel
confident in whatever avenue they persue. In addition to this,
students will develop an appreciation for their Catholic faith though
the dance class. This is achieved by infusing learning with
processional dance repertoire and composing dance pieces based on
Catholic scripture and themes. As well as emboding the Catholic
Social Teachings and Beatitudes through dance.
