Nine Steps Within – A Navadurga Poem by Chandani

Our journey begins with a spark inside, A question asked, a truth implied— With Shailaputri’s curious flame, We step into the sacred name.

Through Brahmacharini, we seek the lore, Of ancient texts and truths once more. 
In discipline, we find our way, Chandraghanta lights our day.

When action flows with grace and might, Kushmanda fills the world with light. 
We nurture deeds with love and art, Skandamata opens the heart.

With clarity, we see our face, In Katyayani’s quiet grace. 
Then ego falls, its shadow dies, As Kalaratri clears the skies.

We shine anew, with truth made pure, In Mahagauri, we endure. 
Now, peaceful in our destined role, Siddhidatri makes us whole.

When we reach the ninth step, our responsibilities naturally increase. Up until now we have been solely focused on elevating ourselves on the spiritual path. With the blessings of perfection, we are now called upon and compelled to help others in the same way that we have been helped.

Siddhidatri

Mata Siddhidatri is the ninth and final form of the Goddess Durga worshipped but she was the first form to appear providing the source of power this universe exists upon. Depicted with four arms and is seated on a lotus flower. In her hands, she holds a mace, a conch shell, a lotus flower, and a book. Mata Siddhidatri is believed to motivate her devotees to develop a disciplined mind and spiritual life to prepare us to accept extraordinary spiritual or supernatural powers and abilities.

❤️ She is also known as Siddhidayini, which means “the giver of supernatural powers” or “the fulfiller of desires.”

Just Let it go…

Maa has evolved to this bright form shedding those qualities that prevented her from reaching her goal. She is the epitome of grace and beauty. Mahagauri sits on a bull (Vrishabha) and has four arms. Her right hand is in the pose of alleviating fear and her right lower hand holds a trident. She holds a ‘damaru’ (a small drum) in her right hand while the lower one grants boons to her devotees.

You are always evolving.

Symbolizing terror, rage, revenge and fierceness at the same time being the mother of the universe and protector of innocents

She is the shadow within us, fearful and fierce. Ready to fight, but anxious of the unknown. She is our power to destroy our own negative feeling and thoughts, leading us to our peaceful ego, Lord Shiva.

We pray to Ma Kali to affirm our power and enlighten our soul.

Katyayani

Compassionate but fierce. It was Katyayani Maa that slayed Mahishasur. She has four hands and holds a long sword in one of Her hands and a lotus in the other two Hands. With Her fourth hand she blesses Her devotees thru the Abhaya mudra. She resolves all the conflicts that create tensions in relationships and makes them peaceful and happy.

Skandamata

The mother of the God of war. Skandamata carries baby Kartikeya in her lap. Goddess Skandamata is depicted with four hands, carrying lotus flowers in her upper two hands.

Worshipping the goddess Skandamata can aid with infertility, child-related issues and the blessings of the God of war. Chanting the Skandamata Mantra can promote not just spiritual development but also inner tranquillity and peace.

When action flows with grace and might, Kushmanda fills the world with light.

She has eight arms with seven deadly weapons and a rosary but all, it took was her divine smile to create the universe.

It is amazing how a smile can change everything. Mata Kushmanda stands for light, good health and ample wealth. Praying to this form of Durga is believed to improve health and bestow wealth and strength.

Depicted as a warrior, ready with her weapons, she will not hesitate to take on evil and win. She is the embodiment of beauty and is also symbolic of bravery. She removes all of our fears and instils hope and faith.
