Last week, we raised the Francophone flag at the Mission Leisure Centre in honour of École des Deux-Rives and the students, families, and educators who help keep the French language and Francophone culture vibrant in Mission.

In a small ceremony with school staff, students and members of Council, Councillor Ken Herar shared remarks to reaffirm the City’s commitment to inclusion, learning, and community on behalf of Council.

We also want to recognize École des Deux-Rives for the work they do every day to support student success and to build a strong sense of belonging.

On , we honour the bravery, service, and contributions made by First Nation, Inuit, and Métis Veterans. Though they often had to travel long distances or learn a new language to enlist, Indigenous Peoples have volunteered at impressive rates to support the Canadian military.

It’s important to acknowledge Indigenous Veterans did not always receive the same recognition for their service. When First-Nations Veterans returned home from WWI and WWII, many were not granted the same pensions, supports, or benefits offered to their non-Indigenous comrades. This made transitioning back to civilian life much more difficult.

On November 8th, we invite you to remember, reflect, and learn more about the history of Indigenous Veterans.

Canada Post has released a commemorative stamp celebrating the contributions of Sikh Canadian soldiers, unveiled Sunday during the 18th annual Sikh Remembrance Day ceremony.

The stamp pays tribute to over a century of Sikh service in Canada’s military — beginning with the 10 Sikh soldiers who served in the First World War — and honours those who continue to serve today.
