Today, on the first day of Passover, we highlight this remarkable painting by William Kurelek that we are fortunate to have brought recently into our permanent collection and that is on view now at the Gallery.
This image comes from a suite of 16 paintings titled Jewish Life in Canada that Kurelek painted in the 1970s to honour his friendship with the Toronto art dealer Avrom Isaacs, who offered the artist a framing job at his gallery before discovering his employee’s remarkable creative gifts. A devout Roman Catholic, Kurelek intended Jewish Life in Canada as a gesture across the cultural divide, implicitly demonstrating his open-mindedness toward Canadians of cultural and religious backgrounds different from his own.
If you're curious to learn more about Kurelek and these paintings, please join us on April 19 for a virtual conversation with Chief Curator Sarah Milroy, Executive Director Ian A.C. Dejardin, Associate Curator John Geoghegan, artist Natalka Husar and York University Professor of Canadian Jewish Studies David Koffman. And for a beautiful reproduction, you can buy our new book about the suite, available online at in the Gallery Shop!
