The landscapes around us are always changing: light shifting across a field, a storm gathering on the horizon, the colours of a prairie sunset.

For Alberta artist Billie Rae Busby (), those everyday moments have become a source of inspiration for nearly two decades.

Working in a bold, hard-edge style, Billie Rae transforms familiar Western Canadian landscapes into vibrant compositions of colour, movement and memory. Her paintings are intentionally abstract, leaving space for each viewer to recognize something different: a season, a place, a road travelled, or simply the feeling of looking out across an enormous sky.

Her connection with Leighton Art Centre stretches back more than 15 years, through exhibitions, friendships and many stages of her artistic career.

We recently sat down with Billie Rae to talk about growing up in Saskatchewan, finding her artistic voice, making the leap to full-time artist, and why she still finds endless inspiration in the landscape around her.

As Billie Rae puts it:

“I hope people see ordinary places and our landscape in a fresh, new way.”

Meet Billie Rae and read her full story on the Leighton Art Centre blog here: https://shorturl.at/Kjgke or by clicking on the LAC Blog link in our Linktree. Special thanks to Patricia Lisevich for this beautiful photo.

We'd like to say a massive thank you to everyone who joined us for the Opening Reception of our two new exhibitions this past Saturday!

We were honoured to share "YouthWorks" featuring work from nineteen young artists aged 13-18 in our Main Gallery, as well as "Hope and Healing Canada: A Journey Towards Decolonization and Reconciliation" by Tracey-Mae Chambers in our Upper Gallery space with so many of our community members, as well as family and friends of the artists. And big thanks to Billie Rae Busby for inspiring the many young artists in attendance with her talk on her path to becoming a professional artist.

We had an amazing turnout and it was great to welcome so many visitors into the gallery! Thank you to everyone who came out to explore these new exhibits, we always love to connect with our community and experience new ideas and perspectives together.

If you couldn’t make it to the opening - not to worry! Both exhibitions will be on view until October 25, make sure you plan to stop by and experience these exhibitions in person. We're open Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 am to 4 pm.
