At Georgian Bay District Secondary School, we are proud to offer our Junior Bears Band Program. Local students in grades 6 to 8 join us on Wednesday evenings to learn an instrument and play in the band. Students receive instruction from GBDSS teachers and mentorship from current GBDSS students. This is a fantastic way for students to get comfortable with high school, make friends from other schools and learn an instrument.

Big news! Last year, the GBDSS Symphonic Band commissioned Canadian composer Kenley Kristofferson to write an original piece for our band. Last April, our Symphonic Band had the incredible experience of getting to premiere this work, which was titled Great Blue Heron.

Today, almost one year later, Great Blue Heron has now been published and can now be enjoyed by concert bands around the world. It is very cool to see what started as an original idea by one of our GBDSS students take flight. A huge thank you to Kenley for his incredible work on this project. Our students loved working on it and our portrait of the Great Blue Heron rests proudly at the front of our music room.

A huge congrats to both our Beginning and Experienced Junior Bears groups for their gold medal performances at this year's Midland Y's Men's Music Festival! You sounded amazing!

This year’s Junior Bears demonstrated incredible focus and dedication throughout their preparation, and it certainly showed on stage. We are especially excited to welcome many of our talented Grade 8 musicians to high school next September!

These incredible performances would not have been possible without the commitment, skill, and enthusiasm of our senior GBDSS music students who have served as mentors to our Junior Bears for the past few months. Your selflessness and work ethic are so appreciated!
