Established in 2014, in association with the Midland Cultural Centre, The Written Word is a community program committed to bringing literature and written word related events to the MCC and local area. In February of 2014 we presented our inaugural event, the first Midland Reads debate, which we will host annually in early March, just prior to the CBC Canada Reads national debate, the inspiration
for our flagship event. The success of our local reading debate also inspired us to make a similar styled event available for high school students, thus Midland Reads High School Edition was established in December of 2014. Two students from each local high school debates a text of their choice, that is studied at school, according to the theme set out by CBC Canada Reads. Through the generous donation of Paul Larmand, Investors Group Consultants Ltd. we are able to provide a bursary for the two students defending the winning novel. The winning novel is chosen by a panel of judges. We also work with the Midland Public Library to bring author readings to Midland as well as various pop-up and satellite events such as Music in the Park and Literally Art. The Written Word as well as the other various programs offered by the MCC are made possible by volunteers. Check out the MCC’s website, midlandculturalcentre.com, for more information.
