The Unfaithful Servants and Shari Ulrich

Is Shari Ulrich being unfaithful? No, but she will be playing at the Merville hall with “BC’s most exciting Newgrass band”, the Unfaithful Servants, who have carved out a name for themselves as one of Canada’s most acclaimed acoustic acts. With explosive instrumentals, compelling story-telling, and high-powered vocals, they deliver a fresh and dynamic take on folk, bluegrass, and Americana.
The band's latest record, Fallen Angel, represents an exciting new chapter for the group with a collection of songs that highlight raw emotion, intricate arrangements, and fiery instrumentals. Fallen Angel showcases a band at the height of its powers.
The Unfaithful Servants lineup includes prolific songwriter and guitarist, Dylan Stone, mandolinist Jesse Cobb (of the Grand Ole Opry), fiddle prodigy Quin Etheridge-Pedden and bassist Mark Johnson.
“Explosive instrumental prowess.”
— Bob Re*****on, Cowichan Bluegrass Festival
And faithfully joining the Unfaithful will be 2-time Juno Awards winner, Shari Ulrich, who has travelled the world with her bands, The Pied Pumkin, Valdy and The Hometown Band and now The High Bar Gang. She has a BC Entertainment Hall of Fame star at Granville and Robson streets in Vancouver and is now looking forward to gaining a Star Billing at the Big Yellow Merville hall. Hello Friends of the Merville hall,

COMOX VALLEY

GARLIC FEST

This year is the 10th annual GARLIC FEST at the Merville hall and it will be held on Sunday, August 17th from 12:00 to 4:00pm.

The Comox Valley is the Land of Plenty and the Merville hall is a hub of this large agricultural region. Garlic is a mainstay crop here and growers rally around the festival each year to be celebrated and to sell their saporously fine crop. There will be many different varieties of garlic offered by farmers; and food vendors will vie for the most intriguing garlic concoction.

There will be the regular Sunday Gumboot Farmers’ Market along with entertainment by talented local musicians helping to get you into the summertime food festival mood. You can try garlicky food; drinks infused with garlic; garlic hair spray; garlic desserts; garlic breath fresheners and, of course, lots of garlic to purchase.

The hall will be open so come on in and check out the exciting pickleball court. You might find local beer as well as chefs who might create savoury garlic gastronomic delights to suit every palate.

There is plenty of parking in the big field and a playground for children (and adults) to play on so plan to saddle up the horses and make your ‘scape to the hall for a stinkin’ good time with your family and friends. Doors open at 12:00 noon and the festival runs to 4:00 pm. The hall is on the corner of the Old Island Highway and Fenwick Road, mere yards from the Merville Store.

And if you are a GARLIC SELLER or ARTISAN VENDOR then let us know of your intention to participate. We are also interested in some FOOD TRUCKS and ENTERTAINERS as well as VOLUNTEERS to help during the Festival. FMI: Craig 250-339-4249;

Fiddle Concert at the Merville hall

Step dancing, fiddle and guitar! How exciting is that!? The explosive Pierre Schryer Trio, (fiddler Pierre, folk dancer Danielle Enblom, and International guitarist Adam Dobres) brings together three diverse music careers laden with nominations and awards including JUNOs and Canadian Folk Music accolades.

Pierre Schryer is one of Canada’s leading traditional fiddlers. A recipient of numerous titles and awards, including Canadian Grand Masters Champion and North American Irish Fiddle Champion, Pierre truly captivates an audience with his energy and genuine warmth. His ability knows no bounds, covering styles from Irish, Scottish, Québecois, and Cape Breton to Canadian Old Time, American Swing and more.

Minnesota step dancer Danielle Enblom, with Red River Métis, French Canadian and Swedish ancestral roots, will dance and perform the old Irish dancing master traditions, along with some flavours of her own Métis and Québécois heritage.

Guitarist Adam Dobres plays Bluegrass, Celtic, Jazz, Gypsy, Country, Folk, Old Time, Rock, Blues, and more. He has travelled and performed throughout North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. From playing Celtic music with some of Canada’s finest fiddle players Adam has branched out to Pop Rock with Grammy Nominee Toni Childs (including an Australian tour where they opened for the legendary Jackson Brown).

The show will surely delight. Schryer, Enblom & Dobres is a tour de force of versatility, fine musicianship, technical dexterity and toe tapping fun!

So, Friday, May 23, make your way to the cozy Merville hall for an evening of the best live music on the Island. Doors open 7:00 pm, show starts 7:30pm. Tickets are $25/$15 (youth) at Long & McQuade, Courtenay and Blue Heron, Comox, and at the door. FMI Craig 339-4249. [email protected]

ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE MERVILLE COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION :

After a decade of vacancy and uncertainly, Hamilton Mack Laing’s c. 1950 historic home known as Shakesides, situated on the edge of the Comox Estuary in Mack Laing Nature Park in Comox BC, has finally been offered an opportunity to be saved and to serve a new purpose on the Merville Community Hall Grounds!

The Merville Community Association has offered to “adopt” the building on its community hall site alongside other historic buildings it has previously saved and successfully rehabilitated for relevant uses. Nickel Brothers house movers has evaluated both the existing and proposed sites, as well as the route of the relocation via water, a plan that represents the least disruptive relocation process for all communities between the two sites. Many volunteers and local companies have already put forward their names to help with the design and professional services, the donation of materials and with general labour.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! This is your chance to contribute to a happy ending for Shakesides, by donating what you can towards the site preparation at the Merville Community Association Hall. This campaign will fund the site preparation, including the excavation and pouring of a new foundation for when Shakesides arrives to its new home. We are now opening up the opportunity to the public to contribute to this community-led initiative of hope, renewal and legacy. Donate what you can here through our Go Fund Me page (https://www.gofundme.com/f/restore-the-shakesides-house-to-merville) , or and reach out to let us know if you are available to get involved with professional services, material donation or hands-on labour. More information will be posted on the Merville Community Association soon!
