If you’ve walked past the Monarch, you may have noticed a new addition above the false doorway on the front of the building - a large “M.”

While many might assume the “M” stands for Monarch, it’s actually a nod to a piece of our building’s history. The letter represents Mac’s Cigar Store, a longtime business that once operated beside the theatre and continues to be a familiar part of downtown Medicine Hat (now located on 3rd Street).

As we continue restoring and celebrating the Monarch’s heritage, we’re excited to bring back details that help tell the story of this historic corner of our community.

A special thank you to Epic Metal Services and Jason Lang for fabricating the new “M” and helping us preserve a small but meaningful piece of local history.
