On the road earlier this week 🚚🌾 we had the chance to visit three of our TREX Venues and see exhibitions out and about!

⭐ Scouring Heaven and Earth at Hanna Library
✏️ Between the Lines at Theresetta Catholic School in Castor
👤 Self Reflection at Stettler Public Library

TREX exhibitions look a bit different at each Venue they travel to. They're installed in places you might not expect to see professional artwork, like school hallways or next to bookshelves at the public library. This is the joy of TREX—bringing art right to where people are! Sparking conversation, adding vibrancy, introducing new ideas, inspiring creativity... Speaking of which, we also had an amazing Visiting Artist Program in Castor, but more on that to come!

Can't get enough of Wings of Wonder? 🦋

Each of our exhibition catalogues feature educational materials and activities for all ages! Produced either in-house or by the exhibiting artists.

For Wings of Wonder, the activity "Paper-Cut" is inspired by the traditional Ukrainian art form, Vytynanky, in which paper is intricately cut to resemble lace.

Access our catalogue here: https://files.cargocollective.com/c1004755/Wings-of-Wonder_Catalogue-WEB.pdf. Instructions on how to make a paper cut-out of your own are found on page 42! ✂️

This is your last week to see Kara Henry's Interoceptive Sensing at Esplanade Project Space! ⭐

In Interoceptive Sensing, Kara presents visual interpretations of her body’s internal landscape, newly reconfigured by onset chronic illness. Like sight and touch, interoception refers to another of the body’s senses. It interprets internal signals and communicates actions towards regulation: hunger pangs cue eating, an itch prompts a scratch. But what were to happen if those signals became haywire? How do you begin to re-orient yourself and navigate back to a balanced state of being? Kara responds by going in search of a map.

Pop by this weekend for a final view! 🏃

Wings of Wonder: Artists Reimagine the Ukrainian Folk Tale is on view at the Esplanade! 🦋

The exhibition presents contemporary artistic renderings of Ukrainian lore. The spirit of which is described by exhibiting artist Liliya Kostiyuk as "slightly humorous, somewhat adventurous, filled with imagination and rich is national colour." In a time of conflict and foreign occupation, these expressions are a form of cultural preservation and soft resistance. They reflect the spirit, wisdom, hopes, and dreams of Ukrainian people.

Organized by Sierra Zukowski, TREX Southeast, Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre in partnership with the Alberta Council for the Ukrainian Arts.

Catch the show here now until October 31! 🐐 🐐 🐐

Shining a TREX Artist Spotlight on ⭐Carmella Haykowsky⭐ !

Carmella Haykowsky is an Edmonton artist and art instructor. She studied printmaking and painting in the BFA program at University of Alberta. She likes to keep her paintings fresh with a loose and expressive style. This way of working allows her to experiment and try new things with each piece.

Carmella's works are currently featured in the exhibition, Wings of Wonder🌷! Painted in an impressionist style, the works are of Ukrainian revellers celebrating Winter Solstice (Kolyada) with carols, music and a parade in soft light to indicate the fading light on the shortest day of the year.

1. Kolyada Festival Children in Animal Costumes, 2025. Oil on board.
2. Kolyada Festival Musicians, 2025. Oil on board.

See these paintings in-person at the Esplanade this month! 👀
