These prices won't be around forever, folks! My hourly right now is less than half the hourly rate of the other artists. That's because all the other artists have at least a minimum of 10 years of experience, and I'm still in my first year. 180$ is more than fair for the other artists, but if you want a fun apprentice tattoo, I'm your guy :) Or there's other talented apprentices in the city as well. Listen, I ain't the best at earnestly marketing myself. I'm better at making fun of myself through funny sketches to promote my tattoos. Anywho, have a great day!

About a year ago, I drew this whale in the hopes of getting a tattoo apprenticeship. At this time, I had a concept art portfolio that was good, but certainly not up to the standards that a lot of studios wanted. Not only that, but there were massive layoffs in the gaming industry.

At this time, my confidence in myself and in my art was the lowest it had been. I was considering going to university and getting a degree I know I would have hated, which meant getting a job I hated. For the first time in my life, I was very uncertain about an art career.

With all that being said, I felt useless when I drew this whale design. I felt I was a failed artist, who had to finally grow up and go to school. I wasnt inspired or confident when i drew this whale. I was sad, and this whale was the product of me trying to show potential tattoo shops my range. And to my surprise, it worked. I got into The Lucky Squid in Medicine Hat.

All I am saying is that this post is a thank you. I do not take this apprenticiship for granted. I want to thank everyone who has gotten tattoos from me, and I want to especially thank Tash. I did this whale design at my lowest, and seeing this tattoo on skin is a reminder of how lucky I am.

Hi everyone! I’m Eric, and since February, I’ve been a tattoo apprentice at The Lucky Squid. I’m grateful for the mentorship and support I’ve received here. Over the past few years, I’ve focused on honing my art skills by attending Vancouver Animation School, Syn Studio, a 3 year mentorship with Sean Vo, courses at the Victoria Fine Art Academy and specialty online courses.

Teaching private art lessons in my own studio, in the education system and at local businesses has deepened my love for drawing and shown me that community and connection is at the heart of my work. To me, a career as a tattoo artist feels like the perfect blend of creating art and sharing it with others.
