Welcome to The Paperback Stage — where every story is an adventure worth taking.
Founded by the Grafton family, The Paperback Stage is built on a simple belief: great stories matter. To us, every tale is a quest for treasure, a beauty to be rescued, and a hero rising to challenge evil. 💫
At the heart of our work are three guiding lights: Truth, Hope, and Adventure. These values shape every story we tell — from the magic of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe to the laughter, courage, and imagination we share with audiences of all ages.
🎭 Our mission is to create theatre that invites audiences to look deeper — to find meaning, courage, and connection in all of life’s stories.
✨ The Paperback Stage exists to explore new theatre adventures.

The Paperback Stage has returned from a long hiatus, but their rendition of C. S. Lewis’ The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe has been well worth the wait.
With the script adapted from the book itself by the production’s artistic director, Richard Grafton, it is a rare occurrence that a review can comment on the contents of the play itself. In this case, said commentary can be enthusiastic: while easy to understand and follow, the dialogue is deeply evocative of the style of the original text and well suited to the small, eight-person cast.
The decision to pare the cast down to eight people itself makes for a deeply interesting production, watching the actors seamlessly glide in and out of various characters, occasionally even on stage.
To be able to slip from persona to persona betrays a level of skill that is to be admired, especially from the younger half of the cast.
Even when being able to observe an actor put on a mask or attach a beaver tail in full view of the audience, the level of voice and movement work in each character truly let them shine in every moment of dialogue and smooth stage combat.
Perhaps one of the most standout parts of the show and what facilitated the actors to put on such a charming performance is the set, which comprises multiple levels of boxes, suitcases and furniture all arranged along the Medicine Hat High School theatre stage. https://medicinehatnews.com/news/local-news/2025/12/23/show-review-paperback-stage-doesnt-miss-a-beat-as-it-returns-with-enthusiastic-performance-of-the-lion-the-witch-and-the-wardrobe/

For a hundred years, Narnia has waited for winter to end.
The creatures of the forest — fauns, centaurs, beavers, and dryads — have lived under the White Witch’s spell, longing for the day when the snow would melt and Aslan would return. Their hope through endless winter feels familiar to us all. We’ve each faced seasons of challenge, waiting for warmth and light to return, trusting that good will overcome in the end. 🌤️
That’s what makes The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe so powerful — it’s more than a story of magic; it’s a reminder that courage, kindness, and faith can break even the coldest spell. 💫

In the shadows of Narnia, the wolves are always watching.
Serving the White Witch, these fearsome creatures strike fear into the hearts of all who resist her icy rule. But in our production of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, the creatures of Narnia are brought to life by a talented cast of eight versatile performers.
Using masks, voice, and movement, each actor transforms again and again — from wolves to fauns, beavers to kings — creating a world that shifts and changes right before your eyes. It’s a thrilling blend of storytelling and imagination where one performer might be both predator and hero within a single heartbeat. 🦁✨
